Context-aware image compression

At least one non-transitory machine accessible storage medium having instructions stored thereon, wherein the instructions, when executed on processing circuitry, cause the processing circuitry to:

• receive a request to compress a first image, wherein the first image is captured by a camera;
• access context information associated with a plurality of images, wherein the context information includes one or more attributes representing a context in which the plurality of images are captured, wherein the plurality of images comprises the first image and one or more second images;
• determine, based at least in part on the context information, whether the first image is related to the one or more second images;
• upon determining that the first image is related to the one or more second images, compress the first image with reference to a related image from the one or more second images;
• and
• upon determining that the first image is unrelated to the one or more second images, compress the first image independently of the one or more second images.

A method of compressing images, comprising:

• receiving a request to compress a first image, wherein the first image is captured by a camera;
• accessing context information associated with a plurality of images, wherein the context information includes one or more attributes corresponding to a context in which the plurality of images are captured, wherein the plurality of images comprises the first image and one or more second images;
• determining, based at least in part on the context information, whether the first image is related to the one or more second images;
• upon determining that the first image is related to the one or more second images, compressing the first image with reference to a related image from the one or more second images;
• and
• upon determining that the first image is unrelated to the one or more second images, compressing the first image independently of the one or more second images.

A system for capturing and compressing images, comprising:

• a camera to capture a plurality of images, wherein the plurality of images comprises a first image and one or more second images;
• and
• processing circuitry to:
• receive a request to compress the first image;
• access context information associated with the plurality of images, wherein the context information includes one or more attributes of a context in which the plurality of images are captured by the camera;
• determine, based at least in part on the context information, whether the first image is related to the one or more second images;
• upon determining that the first image is related to the one or more second images, compress the first image with reference to a related image from the one or more second images;
• and
• upon determining that the first image is unrelated to the one or more second images, compress the first image independently of the one or more second images.
