Abstract
A multi-stage process for transforming a high sulfur ISO 8217 compliant Feedstock Heavy Marine Fuel Oil involving a core desulfurizing process that produces a Product Heavy Marine Fuel Oil that can be used as a feedstock for subsequent refinery process such as anode grade coking, needle coking and fluid catalytic cracking. The Product Heavy Marine Fuel Oil exhibits multiple properties desirable as a feedstock for those processes including a sulfur level has a maximum sulfur content (ISO 14596 or ISO 8754) between the range of 0.05 mass % to 1.0 mass. A process plant for conducting the process is also disclosed.
Claims9
A process for producing a feedstock for a subsequent refinery unit, the process comprising:
- a. combining a quantity of a Feedstock Heavy Marine Fuel Oil, wherein the Feedstock Heavy Marine Fuel Oil is compliant with at least one of the grades of ISO 8217:2017, Table 2, residual marine fuel, except that it has a sulfur content greater than the global MARPOL Annex VI standard of 0.5 wt % sulfur, and wherein the Feedstock Heavy Marine Fuel Oil, has a combined kinematic viscosity at 50° C.;
- and a density at 15° C. giving a CCAI in the range of 780 to 879 and a flash point no lower than 60° C., with a quantity of an Activating Gas mixture to give a Feedstock Mixture;
- b. contacting the Feedstock Mixture with one or more catalysts under reactive conditions to form a Process Mixture from said Feedstock Mixture, wherein said Process Mixture includes a liquid hydrocarbon component;
- c. receiving said Process Mixture and separating a Product Heavy Marine Fuel Oil from the liquid hydrocarbon components of the Process Mixture;
- and,
- d. discharging the Product Heavy Marine Fuel Oil as a feedstock to a subsequent refinery unit.
A process for producing a feedstock for a subsequent refinery unit, the process comprising:
- a. combining a quantity of a Feedstock Heavy Marine Fuel Oil, wherein the Feedstock Heavy Marine Fuel Oil is compliant with at least one of the grades of ISO 8217:2017, Table 2, residual marine fuel, except that it has a sulfur content greater than the global MARPOL Annex VI standard of 0.5 wt % sulfur, with a quantity of an Activating Gas mixture to give a Feedstock Mixture;
- and wherein the Activating Gas has an ideal gas partial pressure of hydrogen greater than 80% of the total pressure of the Activating Gas and, wherein the ratio of the quantity of the Activating Gas to the quantity of Feedstock Heavy Marine Fuel Oil is in the range from 250 scf gas/bbl of Feedstock Heavy Marine Fuel Oil to 10,000 scf gas/bbl of Feedstock Heavy Marine Fuel Oil;
- b. contacting the Feedstock Mixture with one or more catalysts under reactive conditions to form a Process Mixture from said Feedstock Mixture;
- wherein the one or more catalysts is a sulfided transition metal catalyst supported on a porous inorganic oxide catalyst carrier, and is selected from the group consisting of:
- hydrodemetallization catalyst, hydrotransition catalysts, hydrodesulfurization catalyst and combinations of these;
- and wherein the reactive conditions are enclosed within at least one reactor vessel, wherein the at least one reactor vessel has a configuration selected from the group consisting of:
- co-current fixed bed reactor, counter-current fixed bed reactor;
- ebulliated bed reactor, fluidized bed reactor, co-current structured bed reactor, counter-current structured bed reactor, co-current three phase bubble reactors, counter-current three phase bubble reactors, co-current reactive distillation reactors, counter-current reactive distillation reactors, co-current high flux reactor, counter-current high flux reactor, co-current liquid full reactor, counter-current liquid full reactor, and combinations thereof, and wherein the level of hydrocarbon cracking is lower than 10% of the total mass balance;
- c. receiving said Process Mixture and separating the liquid components of the Process Mixture to form a subsequent refinery unit feedstock;
- and,
- d. discharging the subsequent refinery unit feedstock.
