Amorphous solid succinylated 3-(fatty acid amido)-2-hydroxy-1 -(protected hydroxy)-propane salts and methods of making the same

A method of preparing an amorphous solid composition comprising a fatty acid metal salt, the method comprising:

• contacting a 3-(fatty acid amido)-2-hydroxy-1-(protected hydroxy)-propane with succinic anhydride in the presence of an organic base in a polar solvent to produce a succinylated 3-(fatty acid amido)-2-hydroxy-1-(protected hydroxy)-propane organic salt;
• contacting the succinylated 3-(fatty acid amido)-2-hydroxy-1-(protected hydroxy)-propane organic salt with a metal base to produce a succinylated 3-(fatty acid amido)-2-hydroxy-1-(protected hydroxy)-propane metal salt as shown in Scheme I;
• and
• precipitating the succinylated 3-(fatty acid amido)-2-hydroxy-1-(protected hydroxy)-propane metal salt to produce an amorphous solid succinylated 3-(fatty acid amido)-2-hydroxy-1-(protected hydroxy)-propane metal salt composition,
• wherein R is a C10-C20 fatty acid, +Org is an organic cation, and PG is a protecting group.
