Abstract
Distributed fiber optic sensors formed by covering the fibers with tubing are provided. The tubing including responsive materials formulated or configured to, responsive to exposure to one of a target chemical species and a target radiation particle, change a relative size and generate a localized effect on or in the optical fiber.
Claims18
A distributed fiber optic sensor device, comprising:
- an optical fiber;
- tubing disposed adjacent to a surface of the optical fiber, wherein, when used, the tubing is formulated or configured to, responsive to exposure to one of a target chemical species and a target radiation particle, change in a radial size and generate a localized effect on or in the optical fiber due to the change in the radial size;
- and
- one or more of a reactive coating and a responsive coating disposed adjacent to a surface of one of the optical fiber and the tubing, wherein, when used, the reactive coating is formulated or configured to react with a target chemical species and generate a localized thermal effect on or in the optical fiber and, when used, the responsive coating is formulated or configured to respond to a target radiation particle and generate a localized thermal or photonic effect on or in the optical fiber.
