Abstract
A passively, Q-switched laser operating at an eye safe wavelength of between 1.2 and 1.4 microns is described. The laser may operate at a lasing wavelength of 1.34 microns and use a gain element of Nd:YVO4 and a saturable absorber element of V:YAG. The position of the resonator axial mode spectrum relative to a gain peak of the gain element is controlled to yield desired characteristics in the laser output.

A passively Q-switched laser configured to output a series of output pulses in an output beam at an eye-safe lasing wavelength, the passively Q-switched laser comprising:
- a gain element having a first and a second surface, the first surface having a reflective coating at the eye-safe lasing wavelength to form a first end of a resonator;
- a saturable absorber element;
- a second end of the resonator having a partially transmitting optical coating at the eye-safe lasing wavelength;
- a pump source having a pump beam directed to the first surface of the gain element and which forms a pump spot on the first surface of the gain element;
- an aperture arranged to increase losses for higher order transverse modes and support single transverse mode operation;
- and
- wherein the passively Q-switched laser is configured to emit output pulses in the series of output pulses at varying time intervals between successive pulses using two or more axial modes, so as to create a distinct code relating to the series of output pulses, wherein the output pulses have a pulse energy in the range of 0.43 to 3.8 microjoules and an average repetition frequency in the range of 11 to 1820 kHz.
A passively Q-switched laser configured to output a series of output pulses in an output beam at a lasing wavelength between 1.2 and 1.4 microns comprising:
- a gain element having a first and a second surface, the first surface having a highly reflective coating at the lasing wavelength between 1.2 and 1.4 microns to form a first end of a resonator;
- a saturable absorber element;
- a second end of the resonator having a partially transmitting optical coating at the lasing wavelength between 1.2 and 1.4 microns;
- a pump source having a pump beam directed to the first surface of the gain element;
- wherein the passively Q-switched laser is configured or controlled to emit output pulses in the series of output pulses at varying time intervals using two or more axial modes, so as to create a distinct code;
- and
- a deformable spacer, wherein the second end of the resonator is formed on a second surface of the saturable absorber element and the gain element is attached to a first side of the spacer and the saturable absorber element is attached to a second, opposing side of the spacer and the spacer is bendable such that the alignment of the first surface of the spacer with the second surface of the spacer may be adjusted so as to change the alignment of the first surface of the gain element with the second surface of the saturable absorber element.
A passively Q-switched laser configured to output a series of output pulses in an output beam at a lasing wavelength between 1.2 and 1.4 microns comprising:
- a gain element having a first and a second surface, the first surface having a highly reflective coating at the lasing wavelength between 1.2 and 1.4 microns to form a first end of a resonator;
- a saturable absorber element;
- a second end of the resonator having a partially transmitting optical coating at the lasing wavelength between 1.2 and 1.4 microns, wherein a distance between the first and second ends of the resonator is less than 5 mm;
- a pump source having a pump beam directed to the first surface of the gain element, wherein the pump beam has a pump spot diameter on the gain element that is less than 150 microns;
- an aperture arranged to increase losses for higher order transverse modes and encourage single transverse mode operation;
- and
- wherein the passively Q-switched laser is configured or controlled to emit output pulses in the series of output pulses at varying time intervals between successive pulses using two or more axial modes, so as to create a distinct code.
