Abstract
Cross-linked polyvinyl polymers comprising charged groups and methods of making are disclosed. The polymers are effective and durable adsorbent of dyes from aqueous solutions. Also, a method of removal of dyes from contaminated water is disclosed.
Claims4
A hydrogel, comprising:
- a crosslinked polyvinyl polymer, and water;
- wherein the crosslinked polyvinyl polymer consists essentially of:
- polymerized units of a vinylphosphonic acid crosslinked with units of bis[2-(methyacryloyloxy)ethyl]phosphate (BMEP),
- wherein the BMEP is present in the crosslinked polyvinyl polymer in an amount of about 40 mol. % based on the total molar amount of the vinylphosphonic acid and the BMEP,
- wherein the vinylphosphonic acid has chemical formula I:
- wherein R1 is phosphonate;
- and R2, R3, and R4 are independently hydrogen, sulfonate, carboxylate, phosphonate, optionally substituted methyl, ethyl, propyl, optionally substituted cycloalkyl, or optionally substituted aryl or heteroaryl.
