Abstract
A target tissue can be treated with a radioisotope. Some methods for treating a target tissue with a radioisotope include determining a distance between a target tissue and a surface of a matrix material to be positioned adjacent the target tissue and, based on the determined distance, determining an activity to be mixed with the matrix material to obtain a desired activity concentration. Some methods further include mixing the radioisotope with the matrix material. In some embodiments, the matrix material comprises bone cement, and the target tissue is a tumor in a bone. The radioisotope may be a beta-emitting radioisotope mixed in the cement at a concentration to form a radioactive cement.
Claims20
A radioactive material (100) for treating a target tissue in a patient's body, the radioactive material (100) comprising:
- a. a matrix material for placement within the patient's body;
- and
- b. a radioisotope mixed with the matrix material;
- wherein when a surface (110) of the radioactive material (100) is placed a distance from the target tissue, the radioactive material (100) delivers a dose to the target tissue that becomes independent of thickness when radioactive material (100) having a thickness greater than 1.875 mm and widths perpendicular to said thickness greater than 4 mm is placed in the patient's body, and
- wherein the thickness is perpendicular to the surface (110) of the radioactive material (100) closest to the target tissue;
- wherein a fixed concentration of the beta-emitting radioisotope between about 0.1 and about 300 mCi per mL is embedded in the matrix material.
A radioactive material (100), comprising:
- a. a matrix material;
- and
- b, a radioisotope with a fixed concentration between about 0.1 and about 300 mCi per mL mixed with the matrix material;
- wherein at least 90 percent of the emissions from the radioisotope that exit the radioactive material (100) arise from within a set distance A from a surface (110) of the radioactive material (100) and therefore the radioactive material (100) delivers a dose that becomes independent of thickness when the radioactive material (100) has a thickness greater than 1.875 mm and widths perpendicular to said thickness greater than 4 mm;
- wherein the thickness is perpendicular to the surface (110) of the radioactive material (100) closest to the target tissue;
- wherein the radioactive material (100) has a thickness which is greater than or equal to A.
The radioactive material of claim wherein the radioactive material (100) is not configured to solidify or cure.
A method of producing a mixture with an activity concentration between about 0.1 and about 300 mCi per mL of a radioisotope for treating a target tissue in a patient, the method comprising:
- a. determining an activity concentration of the radioisotope to be achieved in the mixture based on:
- i. a determined distance between the target tissue and a surface of the mixture;
- and
- ii. a dose of radiation to be delivered to the target tissue by the radioisotope;
- and
- b. producing the mixture having the activity concentration by combining a matrix material and the radioisotope;
- wherein the mixture is configured such that when placed in a patient, and when a closest surface of the mixture is at the determined distance away from the target tissue, the mixture delivers the dose to the target tissue that becomes independent of thickness of the mixture when the mixture having a thickness greater than 1.875 mm and widths perpendicular to said thickness greater than 4 mm is placed in the patient.
A radioactive material (100), comprising:
- a. a matrix material;
- and
- b. a radioisotope with a fixed concentration between about 0.1 and about 300 mCi per mL mixed with the matrix material;
- wherein at least 90 percent of the emissions from the radioisotope that exit the radioactive material (100) arise from within a set distance A from a surface (110) of the radioactive material (100) and therefore the radioactive material (100) delivers a dose that is independent of thickness of the radioactive material (100);
- wherein when placed a distance from the target tissue, the radioactive material (100) delivers a dose to the target tissue that becomes independent of thickness when radioactive material having a thickness greater than 1.875 mm and widths perpendicular to said thickness greater than 4 mm is placed in the patient's body.
