Abstract
Apparatus and method for digital signal constellation transformation are provided herein. In certain configurations, an integrated circuit includes an analog front-end that converts an analog signal vector representing an optical signal into a digital signal vector, and a digital signal processing circuit that processes the digital signal vector to recover data from the optical signal. The digital signal processing circuit generates signal data representing a signal constellation of the digital signal vector. The digital signal processing circuit includes an adaptive gain equalizer that compensates the signal data for distortion of the signal constellation arising from biasing errors of optical modulators used to transmit the optical signal.

A circuit for an optical communication network, the circuit comprising:
- a receiver configured to (i) receive an optical signal having an in-phase (I) component and a quadrature-phase (Q) component, (ii) recover the I component and the Q component from the received optical signal, and (iii) generate an output including the I component and the Q component;
- and
- an adaptive gain equalizer configured to (i) receive the I component and the Q component, (ii) estimate an angular tilt between the I component and the Q component, and (iii) compensate receive data corresponding to the received optical signal for distortion based on the estimate of the angular tilt between the I component and the Q component.
An optical communication network, the optical communication network comprising:
- an optical network;
- a first optical communication system;
- and
- a second optical communication system,
- the first optical communication system being configured to communicate with the second optical communication system via the optical network, and
- the first optical communication system including:
- a first optical receiver configured to receive a first optical signal from the second optical communication system over the optical network and to generate a first analog signal vector representing the first optical signal, and
- a first transceiver configured to generate a first digital signal vector from the first analog signal vector, the first transceiver being further configured to generate first signal data representing a first signal constellation of the first digital signal vector, and
- the first transceiver comprising a first adaptive gain equalizer configured to generate a first estimate of an angular tilt of the first signal constellation and to generate transformed first signal data by compensating the first signal data for distortion of the first signal constellation based on the first estimate of the angular tilt.
An optical communication network, the optical communication network comprising:
- an optical network;
- a first optical communication system;
- and
- a second optical communication system,
- the first optical communication system being configured to communicate with the second optical communication system via the optical network, and
- the first optical communication system being configured to
- provide optical transmissions over the optical network to the second optical communication system,
- receive a first optical signal from the second optical communication system over the optical network and to generate first analog signal data representing the first optical signal, and
- convert the first analog signal data into first digital signal data, and
- generate first signal data representing a first signal constellation of the first digital signal data,
- the first optical communication system comprising a first adaptive gain equalizer configured to generate a first estimate of an angular tilt of the first signal constellation and to generate transformed first signal data by compensating the first signal data for distortion of the first signal constellation based on the first estimate of the angular tilt.
