Abstract
An improved network architecture for minimizing latency of preparing and sending data to a network over a physical medium. A system for communicating messages over a network may create and store ready-to-send data packets in a data buffer next to or as close as possible, either physically and/or logically, to a MAC component. The MAC component may then receive the data packet directly from the data buffer and encapsulate the data packet into a frame suitable for transmission to the network. The data packet is modifiable while being stored in the data buffer prior to transmission to the network.

A system for communicating messages over an electronic communications network, the system being operative to transmit the messages from a device to the network via a physical medium, the system comprising:
- a first processor of one or more processors, implemented in an application layer of an open systems interconnection (OSI) reference model, configured to create a first data packet for transmission over the physical medium to the network, the first data packet comprising a first plurality of data segments in an ordered format, each data segment of the first plurality of data segments being assigned with a source address of the device, a destination address of another device on the network, an established communication path between the source address and the destination address, and a routing protocol for routing the first data packet over the established communication path;
- a data buffer coupled with the first processor and configured to receive at least a portion the first data packet directly from the first processor and store the first data packet;
- and
- a network adapter coupled to the data buffer and configured to receive the first data packet directly from the data buffer and transmit the first data packet to the network via the physical medium, the network adapter comprising:
- a medium access component in communication with the data buffer and operative to control access to the physical medium and coordinate transmission and reception of data packets therethrough, wherein the medium access component is configured to receive the first data packet directly from the data buffer and encapsulate the first data packet into a frame suitable for transmission, the frame being a binary sequence of bits;
- a transceiver component in communication with the medium access component and the physical medium, the transceiver component operable to convert a message for transmission into a form compatible with the physical medium, wherein the transceiver component is configured to receive the binary sequence of bits of the frame and convert the binary sequence of bits into signals;
- and
- a physical connection to the physical medium, the physical connection being in communication with the transceiver component and operative to receive signals from the transceiver component and transfer the signals to the physical medium, the physical connection being a physical interface between the network and the device.
A computer implemented method comprising:
- creating, by a first processor of one or more processors implemented in an application layer of an open systems interconnection (OSI) reference model, a first data packet for transmission over a physical medium from a device to a network, the first data packet containing a first plurality of data segments in an ordered format, each data segment of the first plurality of data segments being assigned with a source address of the device, a destination address of another device on the network, an established communication path between the source address and the destination address, and a routing protocol for routing the first data packet over the established communication path;
- receiving, by a data buffer coupled to the first processor, the first data packet directly from the first processor;
- storing, by the data buffer, the first data packet;
- receiving, by a medium access component in communication with the data buffer, the first data packet directly from the data buffer;
- encapsulating, by the medium access component, the first data packet into a frame suitable for transmission, the frame being a binary sequence of bits;
- receiving, by a transceiver component in communication with the medium access component and the physical medium, the binary sequence of bits of the frame;
- converting, by the transceiver component, the binary sequence of bits into signals;
- and
- transferring, by an output port of the device in communication with the transceiver component, the signals to the physical medium, the output port being a physical interface between the network and the device.
A system for transmitting data from a device to a network via a physical medium, the system comprising:
- a means for creating, in an application layer of an open systems interconnection (OSI) reference model, a first data packet for transmission over the physical medium, the first data packet containing a plurality of data segments in an ordered format, each data segment of the plurality of data segments being assigned with a source address of the device, a destination address of another device on the network, an established communication path between the source address and the destination address, and a routing protocol for routing the first data packet over the established communication path;
- a means for receiving and storing the first data packet directly from the means for creating the first data packet;
- a means for encapsulating the first data packet into a frame suitable for transmission, the frame being a binary sequence of bits;
- a means for receiving the binary sequence of bits of the frame;
- a means for converting the binary sequence of bits into signals;
- and
- a means for transmitting the signals to the physical medium.
