Performing cross-tabulation using a columnar database management system

A computer-implemented system for performing cross-tabulation on columnar database tables comprising:

• a computer processor;
• a non-transitory computer-readable storage medium;
• and
• stored instructions translatable by the computer processor for:
• receiving a request to cross-tabulate a first database table and a second database table, the first database table having a unique value for a variable stored in the first database table, the unique value cross referenced in the second database table, the first database table and the second database table stored in a columnar format;
• and
• generating a report of a function of the variable comprising:
• for a first dimension defined by a set of discrete values stored in the second database table, a second dimension defined by a set of discrete values stored in the second database table, a pivot dimension defined by a set of possible values, and a filter defined by a filter dimension set at a filter value:
• determining a first domain for the first discrete value in the first dimension;
• determining a second domain for the first discrete value in the second dimension;
• determining a pivot domain for the first discrete value in the pivot dimension;
• determining a filter domain for the filter in the filter dimension;
• determining a first table domain for the first database table based on the first domain corresponding to the second domain;
• determining a second table domain for the second database table based on a second discrete value in the second dimension and corresponding to the filter value;
• collapsing horizontally the first table domain and the second table domain;
• collapsing vertically the collapsed first table domain with the collapsed second table domain to obtain a resolution domain;
• and
• intersecting the pivot domain with the resolution domain to obtain the report of the function of the variable.
