Abstract
A device having a see-through display including a segmented light source configured to provide additional control of an illumination level of an image display. The individual light segments of the light source are individually controlled to together produce a light beam that illuminates the image display to provide an additional range of control of the illumination level. An N number of light segments allow the minimum light level of the light beam to be 1/N of the minimum light the light source can generate. The maximum light level of the beam is N time brighter than a light source with only one light segment. The dynamic level of the image generated is matched to the ambient light about the device such that the image is visually acceptable to a user. The device can be eyewear in one example.
Claims20
Eyewear, comprising:
- a frame;
- a temple coupled to the frame;
- a display supported by the frame;
- an electrical processor;
- and
- a light source configured to be controlled by the electrical processor to generate a light beam that illuminates the display, wherein the light source has a plurality of individually controllable light segments configured to control an illumination level of the display, wherein the light segments are adjacent to another said light segment in a common plane to produce a dense light source having a total area that is the sum of the area of the individual light segments.
A method of use of eyewear having a frame, a temple coupled to the frame, a display supported by the frame, an electrical processor, and a light source generating a light beam illuminating the display, the light source having a plurality of individually controllable light segments configured to control an illumination level of the display, wherein the electrical processor individually controls the light segments to control the illumination level of the light beam that illuminates the display, and the light segments are adjacent to another said light segment in a common plane to produce a dense light source having a total area that is the sum of the area of the individual light segments, comprising the steps of:
- determining an illumination level of the light beam;
- and
- selectively controlling the light segments to establish the illumination level of the light beam, wherein at least one light segment is off.
A non-transitory computer readable medium having code configured to be executed by an electrical processor of an eyewear device having a frame, a temple coupled to the frame, a display supported by the frame, an electrical processor, and a light source generating a light beam illuminating the display, the light source having a plurality of individually controllable light segments configured to control an illumination level of the display, wherein the code is operable by the electrical processor to individually control the light segments to control the illumination level of the light beam that illuminates the display, and the light segments are adjacent to another said light segment in a common plane to produce a dense light source having a total area that is the sum of the area of the individual light segments.
