Abstract
There is disclosed an igniter for a gas turbine engine including: a base, a glow plug heater rod extending from the base along an axis and terminating in a rod end, and a plurality of fins disposed circumferentially around the glow plug heater rod, the fins extending axially along at least a portion of the glow plug heater rod. A gas turbine engine including such an igniter is further disclosed.
Claims20
A gas turbine engine comprising:
- a casing;
- a combustor liner within the casing and spaced apart therefrom, the combustor liner delimiting a combustion chamber;
- a fuel nozzle in fluid communication with the combustion chamber for injecting fuel in the combustion chamber;
- and an igniter spaced apart and distinct from the fuel nozzle, the igniter having a base, a glow plug heater rod extending from the base along an axis and terminating in a rod end, and a sleeve annularly extending around the glow plug heater rod, an annular gap located radially between the sleeve and the glow plug heater rod relative to the axis, the glow plug heater rod radially spaced apart from the sleeve by the annular gap, the annular gap extending circumferentially around the glow plug heater rod, the sleeve defining a plurality of fins disposed circumferentially around the glow plug heater rod, each of the fins having a length extending axially along the axis, a width extending radially relative to the axis, and a thickness extending circumferentially relative to the axis, the length being greater than the width and greater than the thickness, the plurality of fins defining a plurality of spacings located circumferentially between the plurality of fins, the plurality of spacings configured to fluidly communicate with the annular gap such that the annular gap is in fluid communication with an environment outside the annular gap through the sleeve along a radial direction relative to the axis, the plurality of fins extending axially relative to the axis along at least a portion of the glow plug heater rod.
A gas turbine engine comprising:
- a casing;
- a combustor liner within the casing and spaced apart therefrom, the combustor liner delimiting a combustion chamber;
- an igniter, the igniter having a base connected to the casing, a glow plug heater rod, the glow plug heater rod extending from the base along an axis and terminating in a rod end proximate an open end of the igniter;
- and a sleeve annularly extending around the glow plug heater rod, the sleeve defining the open end, the sleeve defining a plurality of fins extending axially along at least a portion of the glow plug heater rod and radially spaced apart from the glow plug heater rod relative to the axis, the plurality of fins defining a plurality of spacings located circumferentially between the plurality of fins, distal portions of the plurality of fins relative to the base are arranged in groups circumferentially interspaced around the axis, the distal portions of the plurality of fins of each of the groups extending radially from a respective wall and in a direction away from the glow plug heater rod, each respective wall extending in a circumferential direction around a respective portion of a circumference of the glow plug heater rod, the walls being spaced apart from the glow plug heater rod to define an annular gap between the walls and the glow plug heater rod.
A method of operating an igniter of a gas turbine engine, the igniter having a glow plug heater rod and a sleeve disposed around the glow plug heater rod, the method comprising:
- receiving a mixture of air and fuel to be ignited in an annular gap defined around the glow plug heater rod and radially between the sleeve and the glow plug heater rod relative to an axis of the glow plug heater rod, the receiving of the mixture including receiving the mixture through the sleeve along a radial direction relative to the axis and through spacings defined circumferentially between fins of the sleeve;
- and
- igniting the mixture of air and fuel with a heating section of the glow plug heater rod.
