Abstract
The present disclosure is directed to a system and method for selectively and reversibly modulating targeted neural and non-neural tissue of a nervous system for the treatment of pain. An electrical stimulation is delivered to the treatment site that selectively and reversibly modulates the targeted neural- and non-neural tissue of the nervous structure, inhibiting pain while preserving other sensory and motor function, and proprioception.
Claims24
A system for selectively and reversibly modulating targeted neural- and non-neural tissue of a nervous system structure, the system comprising:
- an electrical stimulation device comprising one or more electrodes that delivers an electrical stimulation to a treatment site proximate the targeted neural- and non-neural tissue of the nervous system structure, at least one of the one or more electrodes comprising:
- an electrode in the form of an elongated body including two electrical contacts positioned thereon, the electrical contacts including a distal electrical contact adjacent a distal end of the elongated body and a proximal electrical contact located along the elongated body at a location between the distal electrical contact and a proximal end of the electrode, wherein the distal end of the elongated body includes a bend such that a distal tip portion of the elongated body extends at a predefined non-zero degree angle with respect to a longitudinal axis of the elongated body, wherein the distal electrical contact is provided on the distal tip portion of the elongated body and the proximal electrical contact is provided along the elongated body between the distal tip portion and the proximal end of the electrode;
- a controller configured to connect to the one or more electrodes of the electrical stimulation device and to a power source for supplying electrical energy to the one or more electrodes, where the controller is configured to direct operation of the electrical stimulation device and to apply the electrical stimulation to the treatment site through the one or more electrodes;
- and
- a temperature sensor coupled to the electrode for measuring a temperature of a contact surface of the electrode proximate the electrical contacts, the temperature sensor coupled to the controller and provides thermal feedback information regarding a measured temperature,
- wherein the application of the electrical stimulation to the treatment site selectively modulates the targeted neural- and non-neural tissue inhibiting pain and preserving other sensory and motor function, and proprioception,
- wherein at least one of the one or more electrodes includes two electrical contacts sized and configured to be positioned near the nervous system structure during treatment,
- wherein the controller is adjustable to modulate the electrical stimulation in response to the thermal feedback information to maintain a temperature of the contact surface of the stimulation device below a destructive tissue temperature.
An electrode for delivering electrical stimulation to a treatment site proximate for modulating targeted neural- and non-neural tissue of a nervous system structure, the electrode comprising:
- an electrode in the form of an elongated body including two electrical contacts positioned thereon sized and configured to be positioned near the nervous system structure during treatment, the electrical contacts including a distal electrical contact adjacent a distal end of the elongated body and a proximal electrical contact located along the elongated body at a location between the distal electrical contact and a proximal end of the electrode, and
- a temperature sensor coupled to the electrode for measuring a temperature of a contact surface of the electrode proximate the electrical contacts, where the temperature sensor coupled to a controller and provides thermal feedback information regarding a measured temperature,
- wherein the distal end of the elongated body includes a bend such that a distal tip portion of the elongated body extends at a predefined non-zero degree angle with respect to a longitudinal axis of the elongated body, wherein the distal electrical contact is provided on the distal tip portion of the elongated body and the proximal electrical contact is provided along the elongated body between the distal tip portion and the proximal end of the electrode,
- wherein the application of the electrical stimulation to the treatment site selectively modulates the targeted neural- and non-neural tissue inhibiting pain and preserving other sensory and motor function, and proprioception,
- wherein the controller is adjustable to vary at least one parameter of the electrical stimulation in response to the thermal feedback information received from the temperature sensor to adjust a temperature of the contact surface and maintain the temperature of the contact surface of the stimulation device below the destructive tissue temperature.
