Abstract
A Fim3-producing BPZE1 derivative with sufficiently stable fim3 expression to provide improved protection in mice against Fim3-only producing clinical B. pertussis isolates was developed. The fim3 expression in BPZE1f3 did not alter the protective efficacy against Fim2+ strains, nor against strains that produce neither Fim2 nor Fim3.
Claims9
A method of protecting a mammalian subject from developing pertussis, the method comprising the step of administering to the mammalian subject a vaccine comprising a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier and a live attenuated Bordetella strain engineered to stably produce Fim3, wherein the live attenuated Bordetella strain retains the ability to colonize the mammalian subject's lungs and induce a protective immune response against Bordetella infection.
