## Abstract

Presented is a system and methods for receiving metadata, a decryption module and encrypted content from a cable headend, decrypting the encrypted content with the decryption module and presenting the decrypted content to a user. The client device can receive, load and execute any decryption module compatible with the system framework allowing flexibility in the choice or changing of client device manufacturer and/or Digital Rights Management system vendor.

## Claims

### Claim 1

A method for decrypting digital content, which is encrypted using one of a plurality of different encryption techniques, the method comprising:
receiving, at a mobile device, a digital content stream from a service provider, the digital content stream comprising
the digital content,
a decryption module associated with the one of the plurality of different encryption techniques, the decryption module being configured for decrypting the digital content, and
metadata that instructs the mobile device in extracting the decryption module from the digital content stream;
extracting the decryption module as instructed by the metadata from the digital content stream; and
decrypting, by the mobile device, the digital content with the extracted decryption module and a decryption key.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein the metadata comprises a beginning location and an ending location of the decryption module in the digital content stream received by the mobile device.

### Claim 3 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein the metadata comprises a type identifier associated with the decryption module.

### Claim 4 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, further comprising storing the extracted decryption module at the mobile device for use with a subsequently received encrypted digital content.

### Claim 5 (depends on 4)

The method of claim 4, further comprising replacing the stored decryption module with a subsequently received decryption module.

### Claim 6 (depends on 3)

The method of claim 3, further comprising requesting, by the mobile device, the decryption module from the service provider based on the type identifier.

### Claim 7 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein the decrypted content is provided to a display system.

### Claim 8

A mobile device for decrypting digital content, which has been encrypted using one of a plurality of different encryption techniques, the mobile device comprising:
at least one processor;
a non-transitory computer-readable memory for storing computer-readable instructions, wherein the computer-readable instructions, when executed by the at least one processor, cause the mobile device to:
receive a digital content stream from a service provider, wherein the digital content stream comprises
the digital content,
a decryption module associated with the one of the plurality of different encryption techniques, the decryption module being configured for decrypting the digital content, and
metadata that instructs the mobile device in extracting the decryption module from the digital content stream;
extract the decryption module as instructed by the metadata from the digital content stream; and
decrypt the digital content with the extracted decryption module and a decryption key.

### Claim 9 (depends on 8)

The mobile device of claim 8, wherein the computer readable instructions, when executed by the at least one processor, cause the mobile device to extract the decryption module from an unencrypted portion of the digital content stream.

### Claim 10 (depends on 8)

The mobile device of claim 8, wherein the computer readable instructions, when executed by the at least one processor, cause the mobile device to store, in a storage location, the extracted decryption module based on metadata associated with the decryption module.

### Claim 11 (depends on 8)

The mobile device of claim 8, wherein the metadata is stored in an unencrypted portion of said digital content stream.

### Claim 12

A method, stored in a memory and executing on a processor, for delivering a decryption module associated with one of a plurality of different encryption techniques from a service provider to a mobile device, the method comprising:
transmitting, from the service provider, a digital content stream, wherein the digital content stream further comprises
selected digital content,
a decryption module associated with one of the plurality of different encryption techniques, the decryption module being configured for decrypting the selected digital content, and
metadata that instructs the mobile device in extracting the decryption module from the digital content stream.

### Claim 13 (depends on 12)

The method of claim 12, further comprising storing, at the service provider, the metadata in a first storage location associated with the service provider.

### Claim 14 (depends on 12)

The method of claim 12, wherein the selected digital content was encrypted by a content provider.

### Claim 15 (depends on 12)

The method of claim 12, wherein the decryption module was created by a content provider.

### Claim 16 (depends on 12)

The method of claim 12, further comprising receiving, at the service provider, the decryption module from a content provider.

### Claim 17 (depends on 12)

The method of claim 12, further comprising receiving, at the service provider, the metadata from a content provider.
