## Abstract

Embodiments of a method and supplement for preventing and/or treating gastrointestinal distress, including ulcer conditions, in animals such as humans are disclosed. The supplement is in a gel or other form and comprises mastic gum and an emulsifying agent such as lecithin. The supplement may also comprise B vitamins, one or more prebiotics or probiotics, and one or more minerals as well as, pH buffers and flavoring. A disclosed method of preventing and/or treating gastrointestinal distress comprises orally dosing an animal such as a human with the supplement at least once daily.

## Claims

### Claim 1

A method of preventing or treating gastrointestinal ulcer conditions in a human comprising: dosing the human in need thereof with an effective amount of a supplement comprising mastic gum and lecithin wherein the weight ratio of mastic gum to lecithin is from about 1:10 to about 1:50 based on the total weight of mastic gum and lecithin.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein the supplement further comprises from about 500 million to about 10 billion CFUs of one or more probiotics selected from the group consisting of Enterococcus faecium, Lactobacillus acidophilus, Lactobacillus caseii, Lactobacillus plantarum, and mixtures thereof.

### Claim 3 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein the supplement is provided to the human for at least about 30 days.

### Claim 4 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein the supplement is provided to the human from one to three times daily and wherein the supplement further comprises one or more prebiotics or probiotics.

### Claim 5 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein the supplement is provided to the human from one to three times daily and wherein the supplement further comprises one or more B vitamins, one or more prebiotics or probiotics, and one or more minerals.

### Claim 6

A method of preventing or treating gastrointestinal distress in a human comprising:
dosing the human orally with an effective amount at least once daily with a supplement comprising an emulsified mastic gum;
wherein the weight ratio of mastic gum to an emulsifying agent in the emulsified mastic gum is from about 1:10 to about 1:50 based on the total weight of emulsified mastic gum.

### Claim 7 (depends on 6)

The method of claim 6, wherein the emulsified mastic gum comprises lecithin.

### Claim 8 (depends on 7)

The method of claim 7, wherein the emulsified mastic gum comprises a weight ratio of mastic gum to lecithin wherein said weight ratio is effective to prevent or treat gastrointestinal distress by providing the human with about one dose per day.

### Claim 9 (depends on 6)

The method of claim 6, wherein the emulsified mastic gum comprises an emulsifier selected from the group consisting of diacetyl tartaric acid esters of mono- and diglycerides of edible fats or oils, or edible fat-forming fatty acids; mono- and diglycerides of edible fats or oils, or edible fat-forming acids; monosodium phosphate derivatives of mono- and diglycerides of edible fats or oils, or edible fat-forming fatty acids; monosodium phosphate derivatives of mono- and diglycerides of edible fats or oils; propylene glycol; and mixtures thereof.

### Claim 10 (depends on 6)

The method of claim 6, wherein the emulsified mastic gum comprises an emulsifier selected from the group consisting of a lecithin, calcium sterol, soy lecithin, a monoglyceride, magnesium stearate, potassium stearate, sucrose ester, an ethoxylated sorbitan ester, xanthan gum, guar gum, pepsin, methyl cellulose, a glycol ester, a sorbitan ester, glyceryl monostearate, tragacanth, sodium lauryl sulfate, sodium dioctyl sulfosuccinate, and mixtures thereof.

### Claim 11 (depends on 6)

The method of claim 6, wherein the supplement further comprises one or more prebiotics, one or more probiotics, or a combination thereof.

### Claim 12 (depends on 6)

The method claim 6, wherein the supplement further comprises one or more B-vitamins, one or more minerals, or a combination thereof.

### Claim 13 (depends on 12)

The method of claim 12, wherein the weight ratio of the one or more B-vitamins to mastic gum is from about 1:0.1 to about 1:4 based on the total weight of B-vitamins and mastic gum.

### Claim 14 (depends on 6)

The method of claim 6, wherein the supplement further comprises a pH buffer.

### Claim 15 (depends on 6)

The method of claim 6, wherein the emulsified mastic gum comprises soy lecithin.

### Claim 16 (depends on 6)

The method of claim 6, wherein the supplement is in the form of a pellet, powder, granule, liquid, or gel.

### Claim 17 (depends on 6)

The method of claim 6, wherein the supplement comprises from about 0.02 to about 4 grams mastic gum; and from about 5 to about 50 grams lecithin.

### Claim 18 (depends on 6)

The method of claim 6, wherein the human is dosed with the supplement at least two times per day.
