Abstract
Disclosed herein are polymers containing repeating units of formula (I) or copolymers containing the repeating units of formula (I) and (II), where R1 to R12, m, n, p, q, x and y are as defined herein. The polymers and copolymers have an antimicrobial effect and may be used therapeutically or in formulations intended for use as detergents.

A polymer having a repeating unit of formula (I):
- or a copolymer comprising the repeating unit of formula I and a repeating unit of formula (II):
- wherein:
- R1 and R10, when present, independently represent C1-6 alkyl;
- each R2 to R8 and R11 independently represent H or C1-6 alkyl;
- each R9 and R12 independently represents H, C1-6 alkyl or CO2R13;
- R13 represents H or C1-6 alkyl;
- X represents CR14R15, O or S;
- R14 and R15 independently represent H, C1-6 alkyl or CO2R13;
- m is a number selected from 0 to 5;
- n is a number selected from 2 to 10;
- p is a number selected from 1 to 5;
- q is a number selected from 0 to 3;
- x is a number selected from 2 to 10;
- y is a number selected from 0 to 3;
- the polymer comprises a —NH2 or —N═CH2 group as a chain terminating group;
- and
- solvates thereof,
- provided that, when the compound is a copolymer, the repeating unit of formula (I) and the repeating unit of formula (II) are not the same.
