## Abstract

The present invention relates to compositions of S-enantiomer enriched oxprenolol and their use in treating cancer and treating or preventing, in cancer patients, cachexia, body weight loss, lean body mass loss and adipose tissue loss, and improving quality of life and prolonging survival of cancer patients.

## Claims

### Claim 1

A method of treating cachexia in an individual having metastatic cancer, wherein the metastatic cancer has spread to an organ selected from the group consisting of lung, bone, liver, brain and lymph node, comprising administering to the individual an effective amount of a composition comprising oxprenolol or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof, wherein the composition is enantiomerically enriched for S-oxprenolol and comprises an enantiomeric excess of at least about 50% of S-oxprenolol.

### Claim 2

A method of delaying the development of body weight loss of an individual having metastatic cancer, wherein the metastatic cancer has spread to an organ selected from the group consisting of lung, bone, liver, brain and lymph node, comprising administering to the individual an effective amount of a composition comprising oxprenolol or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof, wherein the composition is enantiomerically enriched for S-oxprenolol and comprises an enantiomeric excess of at least about 50% of S-oxprenolol.

### Claim 3 (depends on 2)

The method of claim 2, wherein the composition comprises an enantiomeric excess of at least about 80% of S-oxprenolol.

### Claim 4 (depends on 3)

The method of claim 3, wherein the composition comprises an enantiomeric excess of at least about 99% of S-oxprenolol.

### Claim 5 (depends on 4)

The method of claim 4, wherein the composition comprises an enantiomeric excess of at least about 99.9% of S-oxprenolol.

### Claim 6 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein the cancer is a late stage cancer.

### Claim 7 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein the composition is administered orally.

### Claim 8 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein the amount of S-oxprenolol administered to the individual is about 80 to about 160 mg daily.

### Claim 9 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein the composition is administered daily, twice daily, or three times a day.

### Claim 10 (depends on 2)

The method of claim 2, wherein the individual has one or more symptoms of cancer cachexia.

### Claim 11 (depends on 2)

The method of claim 2, wherein the metastatic cancer has spread to an organ selected from lung, bone, liver, brain, and lymph node.

### Claim 12 (depends on 2)

The method of claim 2, wherein the composition comprises an enantiomeric excess of at least about 80% of S-oxprenolol.

### Claim 13 (depends on 12)

The method of claim 12, wherein the composition comprises an enantiomeric excess of at least about 99% of S-oxprenolol.

### Claim 14 (depends on 13)

The method of claim 13, wherein the composition comprises an enantiomeric excess of at least about 99.9% of S-oxprenolol.

### Claim 15 (depends on 2)

The method of claim 2, wherein the cancer is a late stage cancer.

### Claim 16 (depends on 2)

The method of claim 2, wherein the composition is administered orally.

### Claim 17 (depends on 2)

The method of claim 2, wherein the amount of S-oxprenolol administered to the individual is about 80 to about 160 mg daily.

### Claim 18 (depends on 2)

The method of claim 2, wherein the composition is administered daily, twice daily, or three times a day.

### Claim 19 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein the amount of S-oxprenolol administered to the individual is at least about 1 mg/kg, at least about 2.5 mg/kg, or at least about 5 mg/kg, daily.

### Claim 20 (depends on 2)

The method of claim 2, wherein the amount of S-oxprenolol administered to the individual is at least about 1 mg/kg, at least about 2.5 mg/kg, or at least about 5 mg/kg, daily.
