Abstract
A temporary shield erected between two flanged structural members of a bridge or other structure, and a method for erection of the shield. A plurality of length-adjustable beams have end portions which are rested on flanges respectively of the structural members in a manner so that they are not fixed thereto. Decking is attached to the beams. At least one elongate member is cantileverly extended from at least one of the beams to underlie a structural member flange to prevent wind lift-up of the shield. A shield is also erected by adjusting the lengths of and hanging the end portions of each of a multitude of beams from the structure with the beams lying side-by-side. Decking is attached to the beams.
Claims18
A shield hung from a structure, the shield comprising a multitude of at least three length-adjustable side-by-side beams spaced one from another and each of the beams having end portions, cables directly attaching said end portions of each of said beams to the structure at attachment points respectively so that said beams are hung from the structure, wherein a length of each beam is adjusted to a distance between the attachment points on the structure, and the shield further comprising decking attached to said beams.
A method of erecting and hanging a shield from a structure wherein the shield comprises a multitude of at least three length-adjustable side-by-side beams spaced one from another and each of the beams having end portions, cables directly attaching the end portions of each of the beams to the structure at attachment points respectively so that the beams are hung from the structure, and decking attached to said beams, the method comprising the steps of
- attaching upper ends of the cables to the attachment points on the structure,
- adjusting a length of each of the at least three beams to match a distance between the attachment points respectively on the structure,
- attaching lower ends of the cables to the end portions of each of the beams respectively so that the beams are side-by-side and hung from the structure, and
- attaching the decking to the beams.
A shield erected between two flanged structural members of a structure, the shield comprising a plurality of length-adjustable beams having end portions which rest on flanges respectively of the structural members in a manner such that said beams are not fixed to said flanges, and the shield further comprising decking attached to said beams, the shield further comprising means for holding the shield down to prevent wind up-lift of the shield, said means for holding the shield down including at least one bracket extending at least partially around and attached to one of said beams, and a cantilevered arm extending from said bracket and underneath at least a portion of a respective one of said flanges.
A method for temporarily erecting a shield to lie between and to be supported by two spaced members of a structure, the method comprising the steps of adjusting the lengths of a plurality of length-adjustable beams so that end portions of each of the beams may rest on flanges of the two spaced members respectively of the structure, placing the length-adjusted beams between the two spaced members of the structure so that the end portions of each of the length-adjusted beams rest on the flanges respectively in a manner such that the length-adjusted beams are not fixed to the flanges, and attaching decking to the beams, the method further comprising attaching a bracket to at least one of the beams so that the bracket extends at least partially around the at least one of the beams, and cantileverly extending a plate from said bracket at least partially underneath a flange of one of the structural members to prevent wind up-lift of the shield.
