Abstract
Systems and methods for controlling engine brake disengagement in a vehicle include a controller receiving a signal indicative of a command to disengage an engine brake while the vehicle engine is in engine brake engaged condition. The engine can be subjected to a first negative torque under the engine brake engaged condition. The controller can cause the engine brake to be gradually disengaged over a time period using a predefined torque ramp rate, responsive to the signal. The gradual disengagement of the engine brake can be in the form of a phased out disengagement, and can reduce vehicle engine jerk associated with engine brake disengagement.
Claims20
A controller for controlling engine brake disengagement, the controller comprising:
- a processor;
- and
- a memory storing executable instructions, the executable instructions, when executed by the processor, cause the processor to:
- receive a signal indicative of a command to disengage an engine brake for an engine in an engine brake engaged condition, the engine subjected to a first negative torque under the engine brake engaged condition;
- determine an incremental engine brake disengagement pattern using a predefined torque ramp rate;
- and
- cause the engine brake to be gradually disengaged over a time period according to the incremental engine brake disengagement pattern.
A method of controlling engine brake disengagement, the method comprising:
- receiving, by a controller, a signal indicative of a command to disengage an engine brake for an engine in an engine brake engaged condition, the engine subjected to a first negative torque under the engine brake engaged condition;
- determining, by the controller, an incremental engine brake disengagement pattern using a predefined torque ramp rate;
- and
- causing, by the controller. the engine brake to be gradually disengaged over a time period according to the incremental engine brake disengagement pattern.
A system, comprising:
- an engine brake system;
- and
- a controller coupled to the engine brake system, the controller configured to:
- receive a signal indicative of a command to disengage an engine brake while the engine brake system is engaged, an engine subjected to a first negative torque under the engine brake engaged condition;
- determine an incremental engine brake disengagement pattern using predefined torque ramp rate;
- and
- cause the engine brake to be gradually disengaged over a time period according to the incremental engine brake disengagement pattern.
