System and method for supporting node role attributes in a high performance computing environment

A method for supporting node role attributes in a high performance computing environment, comprising:

• providing, at one or more microprocessors, a subnet, the subnet comprising:
• a subnet manager, wherein the subnet manager, on startup of the subnet, performs a discovery sweep and a routing of the subnet, the subnet comprising a plurality of nodes, wherein each of the plurality of nodes comprises a node role attribute of a plurality of node role attributes, each node role attribute being determined by a respective node;
• querying, by the subnet manager, a node of the plurality of nodes to determine a node role of the node within the subnet, such determination being based upon the node role attribute of the node;
• upon a reconfiguration of the subnet, updating the role of the node of the plurality of nodes;
• and
• upon the update of the role of the node within the subnet, updating the node role attribute of the node based upon a determination by the node.

A non-transitory computer readable storage medium, including instructions stored thereon for supporting node role attributes in a high performance computing environment, which when read and executed by one or more computers cause the one or more computers to perform steps comprising:

• providing, at one or more microprocessors, a subnet, the subnet comprising:
• a subnet manager, wherein the subnet manager, on startup of the subnet, performs a discovery sweep and a routing of the subnet, the subnet comprising a plurality of nodes, wherein each of the plurality of nodes comprises a node role attribute of a plurality of node role attributes, each node role attribute being determined by a respective node;
• querying, by the subnet manager, a node of the plurality of nodes to determine a node role of the node within the subnet, such determination being based upon the node role attribute of the node;
• upon a reconfiguration of the subnet, updating the role of the node of the plurality of nodes;
• and
• upon the update of the role of the node within the subnet, updating the node role attribute of the node based upon a determination by the node.
