Extendable cutting tools for use in a wellbore

A bottomhole assembly (BHA), comprising:

• a first underreamer including a plurality of first underreamer blades and a first underreamer piston, wherein each of the first underreamer blades is attached to the first underreamer piston by a respective connector of a plurality of connectors, wherein the first underreamer piston and the plurality of connectors are operable to move the plurality of first underreamer blades from a retracted to an extended position, wherein the plurality of first underreamer blades move axially with the first underreamer piston and laterally outward relative to the first underreamer piston to the extended position;
• a second underreamer including a plurality of second underreamer blades attached to a second underreamer piston, wherein the second underreamer piston is operable to move the plurality of second underreamer blades from a retracted to an extended position;
• a first lock operable to retain the plurality of first underreamer blades in the retracted position;
• a second lock operable to retain the plurality of second underreamer blades in the retracted position;
• and
• an electronic package configured to release at least one of the first and second lock in response to an instruction signal to allow the extension of the respective first and second plurality of underreamer blades.

A method of actuating a first underreamer and a second underreamer of a bottom hole assembly (BHA), comprising:

• positioning the BHA in a wellbore, the BHA further comprising:
• a first lock operable to retain a plurality of blades of the first underreamer in a retracted position when locked and to allow extension of the blades to an extended position when unlocked, wherein each blade of the first underreamer is attached to a piston of the first underreamer by a respective connector of a plurality of connectors;
• a second lock operable to retain a plurality of blades of the second underreamer in a retracted position when locked and to allow extension of the blades to an extended position when unlocked;
• unlocking the first lock to allow the extension of the plurality of blades of the first underreamer, wherein the plurality of blades move axially with the piston and laterally outward relative to the piston;
• reaming the wellbore with the plurality of blades of the first underreamer;
• unlocking the second lock to allow the extension of the plurality of blades of the second underreamer;
• and
• reaming the wellbore with the plurality of blades of the second underreamer.

A bottomhole assembly (BHA), comprising:

• a first underreamer including:
• a first underreamer piston;
• a plurality of first underreamer arms;
• and
• a connector for each respective underreamer arm to attach each respective underreamer arm to the first underreamer piston;
• wherein the first underreamer piston and each connector are operable to move the plurality of first underreamer arms from a retracted position to an extended position;
• a second underreamer including a second underreamer piston operable to move a plurality of second underreamer arms from a retracted position to an extended position, wherein the plurality of second underreamer arms are attached to the second underreamer piston;
• a first control module including a first controller and a first lock, wherein the first control module is configured to retain the first underreamer arms in the retracted position when the first lock is engaged, and wherein the first controller is configured to release the first lock in response to a first instruction signal;
• and
• a second control module including a second controller and a second lock, wherein the second control module is configured to retain the second underreamer arms in the retracted positon when the second lock is engaged, and wherein the second controller is configured to release the second lock in response to a second instruction signal, wherein the first and second control modules are between the first and second underreamers.
