Abstract
A seam ripping assembly for use in preparing a coiled tubing operation in a production well, such as, for example, in the oil and gas industry. More particularly, the present invention pertains to a method and apparatus for seam dressing that can be used to efficiently remove a weld seam along an inner diameter on a section of coiled tubing, thereby allowing a coil connector to then be able to attach to an end of said section of coiled tubing.
Claims9
A method for removing a weld seam from within an inner surface or an outer surface of a distal end of a section of coiled tubing in preparation for a downhole operation in a production well comprising:
- a) inserting a plug member into a section of coiled tubing in order to create a barrier and prevent any fluid or debris from interrupting said weld seam removal;
- b) attachably connecting a seam dressing apparatus to said distal end of said coiled tubing, wherein said seam dressing apparatus comprises:
- i) a shaft member having a first end, a second end, and an outer surface, wherein said first end is attachably connected to a drive motor mechanism, and said outer surface comprises a plurality of visual depth markings;
- ii) a bit member comprising a substantially rough outer surface, wherein said bit member is attachably connected to said second end of said shaft member;
- iii) a sleeve member having a first end, a second end, and an inner surface defining an inner chamber, wherein said second end of said sleeve member attachably connects to said distal end of said coiled tubing, and said shaft member and said bit member are received within said inner chamber;
- c) manually holding said seam dressing apparatus;
- and
- d) applying a power source to said seam dressing apparatus by way of said drive motor mechanism.
