Abstract
Methods and systems of collecting carbon dioxide are disclosed. In one example, a method includes removing water from atmospheric air with a condenser and a desiccant material to produce dry air, adsorbing carbon dioxide to a material from the dry air, releasing the adsorbed carbon dioxide to a vacuum chamber, and transitioning the released carbon dioxide from a gas to a solid in the vacuum chamber.
Claims20
An apparatus for collecting carbon dioxide, said apparatus comprising:
- a plurality of air moving devices configured to generate a flow of atmospheric air;
- a condenser for removing water from the flow of the atmospheric air;
- a first collection assembly comprising:
- a first desiccant chamber for removing additional water from a flow of output air from the condenser to produce a first flow of dry air, the first desiccant chamber having an ingress for receiving the flow of output air from the condenser;
- a first contactor chamber for extracting carbon dioxide from the first flow of dry air to a first material in the first contactor chamber, the first contactor chamber having an egress for outflowing an outflow air from the first contactor chamber;
- a first door for closing the ingress to the first desiccant chamber;
- a second door for closing the first desiccant chamber from the first contactor chamber;
- and
- a third door for closing the egress from the first contactor chamber,
- wherein the first collection assembly defines a first channel from the ingress of the first desiccant chamber to the egress of the first contactor chamber;
- a second collection assembly comprising:
- a second desiccant chamber for removing additional water from a flow of output air from the condenser to produce a second flow of dry air, the second desiccant chamber having an ingress for receiving the flow of output air from the condenser;
- a second contactor chamber for extracting carbon dioxide from the second flow of dry air to a second material in the second contactor chamber, the second contactor chamber having an egress for outflowing an outflow air from the second contactor chamber;
- a fourth shutter door for closing the ingress to the second desiccant chamber;
- a fifth shutter door for closing the second desiccant chamber from the second contactor chamber;
- and
- a sixth shutter door for closing the egress from the second contactor chamber,
- wherein the second collection assembly defines a second channel from the ingress of the second desiccant chamber to the egress of the second contactor chamber, wherein the second channel of the second collection assembly is parallel to the first channel of the first collection assembly;
- a controller configured to direct the flow of output air alternately from said condenser to said first collection assembly and said second collection assembly;
- and
- an evacuation apparatus coupled to said first contactor chamber and said second contactor chamber to collect the extracted carbon dioxide from said first contactor chamber and said second contactor chamber, said evacuation apparatus configured to transition the collected carbon dioxide from a gas to a solid.
An apparatus for collecting carbon dioxide, said apparatus comprising:

- a fourth shutter door for closing the ingress to the second desiccant chamber;
- a fifth shutter door for closing the second desiccant chamber from the second contactor chamber;
- and
- a sixth shutter door for closing the egress from the second contactor chamber,
- wherein the second collection assembly defines a second channel from the ingress of the second desiccant chamber to the egress of the second contactor chamber, wherein the second channel of the second collection assembly is parallel to the first channel of the first collection assembly;
- a controller configured to direct the flow of output air alternately from said condenser to said first collection assembly and said second collection assembly;
- a first vacuum chamber coupled to said first contactor chamber and said second contactor chamber;
- a vacuum pump in selective flow communication with said first vacuum chamber to collect the extracted carbon dioxide from the first and second contactor chambers to the vacuum chamber;
- a cold finger to transition the collected carbon dioxide from a gas phase to a solid phase in the vacuum chamber;
- a refrigerant compressor for supplying a coolant to the cold finger;
- a first refrigerant conduit for flowing the coolant from the cold finger to the condenser;
- a second refrigerant conduct for flowing the coolant from the condenser to the refrigerant compressor;
