Storage of post-climacteric fruit

A system comprising:

• an enclosure having an interior volume, wherein the interior volume is configured to store fruit therein;
• a thermal module configured to cool and heat the interior volume of the enclosure through an internal heat exchanger;
• a temperature monitor for monitoring a temperature of air within the interior volume;
• a gas exchanger configured to allow the air within the interior volume to move out of the enclosure and allow air outside the enclosure to move into the interior volume;
• a thermal shield within the enclosure, wherein the thermal shield is located between the internal heat exchanger and a fruit storage space within the interior volume;
• and
• a controller configured to direct the thermal module to thermal cycle the temperature within the interior volume about a desired storage temperature based on the temperature of the air within the interior volume;
• wherein the controller is configured to control the thermal cycling of the air within the enclosure by directing the thermal module to alternate between an expansion state and a contraction state, wherein the thermal module decreases the temperature to contract the air within the interior volume during the contraction state and increases the temperature to expand the air within the interior volume during the expansion state, wherein the thermal module increases and decreases the temperature of the air within the interior volume within a swing temperature of the desired storage temperature, wherein a portion of the air within the interior volume is pushed out of the enclosure through the gas exchanger during the expansion state and gas outside the enclosure is drawn into the interior volume through the gas exchanger during the contraction state, wherein the contraction and expansion of air within the interior volume is the primary cause of mixing the air within the interior volume with the gas outside the enclosure.
