The invention provides a novel class of clearable, tumor-targeting and human protein-based MRI nanoprobes and contrast agents and their compositions, and methods of preparation and use thereof.

A nanoparticle consisting of a human transferrin (Tf) protein and a gadolinium mineral, wherein
- the gadolinium mineral is deposited within the tertiary structural of the human transferrin (Tf) protein and wherein the gadolinium mineral is one or more selected from Gd2O3, GdOOH, GdN, GdPO4, Gd(C2O4), GdF3 and Gd2(CO3)3.
