## Abstract

The present invention relates to the field of culturing unicellular red algae (URA). The invention relates in particular to a method for culturing URA, characterised in that the culture medium includes milk permeate as the main contribution of at least one carbon source. The invention also relates to biomass which can be obtained by the method according to the invention, to the uses of said biomass and to the products that can include said biomass.

## Claims

### Claim 1

A method for producing unicellular red algae (URA) biomass, said URA being selected from the genus Galdieria, the method comprising the following steps:
a) culturing said unicellular red algae (URA) in a medium containing at least one lacteal permeate selected from milk permeate, whey permeate, buttermilk and mixtures thereof; said lacteal permeate comprising lactose as carbon source and organic acids selected from lactic acid and citric acid; and
b) collecting from the culture medium the biomass produced containing said URA,
wherein the lactose from lacteal permeate is at an initial concentration in the culture medium ranging between 0.05 g/L and 200 g/L; and
wherein the biomass produced has a URA density of between 20 and 200 g/L dry matter.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein lactose is the only carbon source.

### Claim 3 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein the lactose is at an initial concentration in the culture medium ranging between 0.1 g/L and 150 g/L.

### Claim 4 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, further including at least one illumination step.

### Claim 5 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein the culture medium includes lactose from the lacteal permeate and an additional carbon source.

### Claim 6 (depends on 5)

The method of claim 5, wherein the additional carbon source other than lactose is selected from glucose, sucrose, and acetate.

### Claim 7 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein the total carbon source is at a concentration in the initial medium ranging between 0.05 g/L and 200 g/L.

### Claim 8 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, further comprising a step c) of extraction of phycobiliproteins from the collected biomass.

### Claim 9 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein the URA are selected from Galdieria daedala, Galdieria maxima, Galdieria partita and Galdieria sulphuraria.

### Claim 10 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein the URA is of the species Galdieria sulphuraria.

### Claim 11 (depends on 3)

The method of claim 3, wherein the lactose in the culture medium is at an initial concentration ranging between 10 g/L and 80 g/L.

### Claim 12 (depends on 7)

The method of claim 7, wherein the total carbon source in the initial medium is at a concentration ranging between 0.5 g/L and 100 g/L.

### Claim 13 (depends on 8)

The method of claim 8, wherein the phycobiliproteins are phycocyanins.

### Claim 14 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein the lacteal permeate is milk permeate.
