Abstract
Sabots and riders are described herein that have high torsional stiffness, providing for utility in high-speed projectiles. The sabots include multiple petals with a closed configuration comprising polymer or metal containing composites. Corresponding systems and methods also are disclosed.

A launchable projectile system comprising at least two sabot petals, each petal comprising a first hollow, unfilled rigid tube with a closed cross-sectional area and extending along an entire length of the petal, wherein the first tube has an annular wall comprising an outer peripheral wall surface including an interior wall surface section, the first tube comprising fiber as a lamina, braid, or weave, the sabot petals being positioned around a sub-caliber projectile.
