Abstract
A surgical instrument comprising an RFID system is disclosed. A staple cartridge of the surgical instrument comprises one or more RFID tags which are detectable by one or more RFID readers in the surgical instrument.
Claims27
A surgical instrument, comprising:
- an end effector, comprising:
- a proximal end;
- a distal end;
- a longitudinal axis extending between said proximal end and said distal end;
- an anvil;
- a staple cartridge channel;
- and
- a staple cartridge positioned in said staple cartridge channel, comprising:
- a cartridge body comprising a longitudinal slot;
- a removable cover releasably attached to said cartridge body;
- staple cavities defined in said cartridge body;
- staples removably stored in said staple cavities;
- a sled movable relative to said longitudinal slot during a staple firing stroke;
- an RFID tag mounted to said staple cartridge in a tag plane;
- and
- an RFID reader comprising an induction coil receiver, wherein said induction coil receiver is mounted to a sidewall of said staple cartridge channel in a receiver plane, wherein said receiver plane is substantially parallel to said tag plane in order to identify said staple cartridge to determine an operating mode of said surgical instrument, wherein said receiver plane is substantially parallel to said longitudinal axis, and wherein said RFID reader is configured to communicate with a controller of said surgical instrument in order to alter the operating mode of said surgical instrument in response to identifying at least one operating status of said staple cartridge positioned in said staple cartridge channel.
13 more elements
A surgical instrument, comprising:
- an end effector, comprising:
- a staple cartridge support;
- and
- a staple cartridge positioned in said staple cartridge support, comprising:
- a cartridge body comprising a longitudinal slot;
- staple cavities defined in said cartridge body;
- staples removably stored in said staple cavities;
- and
- an RFID tag mounted to said staple cartridge, wherein said RFID tag comprises a base and a tag antenna mounted to said base, and wherein said tag antenna is defined in a tag plane;
- and
- an RFID reader comprising an induction coil receiver, wherein said induction coil receiver is mounted to said staple cartridge support in a receiver plane, wherein said receiver plane is substantially parallel to said tag plane in order to identify said staple cartridge to determine an operating mode of said surgical instrument, and wherein said RFID reader is configured to communicate with a controller of said surgical instrument in order to modify the operating mode of said surgical instrument in response to identifying at least one operating status of said staple cartridge positioned in said staple cartridge support.
8 more elements
An end effector of a surgical instrument, comprising:
- a staple cartridge support;
- and
- a staple cartridge positioned in said staple cartridge support, comprising:
- a cartridge body comprising a longitudinal slot;
- staple cavities defined in said cartridge body;
- staples removably stored in said staple cavities;
- and
- an RFID tag mounted to said staple cartridge, wherein said RFID tag comprises a tag antenna defined in a tag plane;
- and
- an RFID reader comprising a receiver antenna, wherein said receiver antenna is mounted to said staple cartridge support in a receiver plane, wherein said receiver plane is parallel to said tag plane in order to identify said staple cartridge to determine an operating mode of said surgical instrument, and wherein said RFID reader is configured to communicate with a controller of said surgical instrument in order to alter the operating mode of said surgical instrument in response to identifying at least one operating status of said staple cartridge positioned in said staple cartridge support.
