Abstract
Methods and pharmaceutical compositions for treating ischemic injury are provided. The methods include administering a therapeutically effective amount of a vascular matrix metalloproteinase 9 (MMP-9) inhibitor that reduces ischemic injury in a subject.
Claims14
A method of treating tissue injury after the onset of ischemia induced by thromboembolism comprising:
- determining that a subject will be or is in need of therapy to reduce ischemic injury;
- and
- administering intravenously to the subject a therapeutically effective amount of a vascular-selective matrix metalloproteinase 9 (MMP-9) inhibitor that does not cross the intact blood-brain barrier to treat tissue injury after the onset of ischemia, wherein the MMP-9 inhibitor is an antibody or fragment thereof that binds MMP-9.
A method of treating ischemic stroke induced by thromboembolism comprising administering intravenously to a human subject in need thereof a treatment effective amount of vascular-selective MMP-9 inhibitor that does not cross the blood-brain barrier and a plasminogen activator, wherein the MMP-9 inhibitor is an antibody or fragment thereof that binds MMP-9.
