## Abstract

Techniques are disclosed for programming a luminaire with location information, referred to herein as commissioning. Location information may include relative location information (e.g., the position of the luminaire relative to a reference point) and/or absolute location information (e.g., global coordinates for the luminaire). A commissioned luminaire can be configured to emit its location information via light-based communication (LCom). In some cases, the luminaire can be commissioned manually, by hard coding the luminaire with its location either at the luminaire itself or using a device (e.g., a smartphone, tablet, or a dedicated luminaire commissioning device) to program the luminaire with location information. In some cases, the luminaire can be commissioned automatically. In some cases, the luminaire may be configured to provide visual, aural, or tactile feedback to indicate that the luminaire has not received location data or that the luminaire has been moved.

## Claims

### Claim 1

A luminaire comprising:
a communication module configured to receive commissioning device location from a commissioning device when the luminaire needs to be commissioned, the commissioning device location used to determine luminaire location information, wherein the commissioning device location is received during commissioning and commissioning comprises programming the luminaire with location information,
a memory configured for storing the location information for the luminaire;
at least one solid-state light source configured to output light; and
at least one modulator configured to modulate the light output to allow for emission of light-based communication (LCom) signals, wherein the signals allow the luminaire location information to be determined;
wherein the luminaire is configured to provide at least one of visual, aural, and tactile feedback to indicate that the luminaire has not received the commissioning device location.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

The luminaire of claim 1, wherein the commissioning device location is determined based on at least one of:
a global positioning system;
a Wi-Fi-based positioning system;
LCom signals; and
an inertial navigation system configured to calculate the commissioning device location using data from an accelerometer and a gyroscopic sensor.

### Claim 3 (depends on 1)

The luminaire of claim 1, wherein the luminaire is further configured to provide at least one of visual, aural, and tactile feedback to indicate that the luminaire has been moved.

### Claim 4 (depends on 1)

The luminaire of claim 1, wherein the feedback includes transitioning the light output between a maximum and minimum dimming value.

### Claim 5 (depends on 1)

The luminaire of claim 1, wherein the luminaire is further configured to stop providing the feedback after receiving the commissioning device location.

### Claim 6 (depends on 1)

The luminaire of claim 1, further comprising memory configured to store information related to at least one of the following:
whether the luminaire has received the commissioning device location; and
whether the luminaire has been moved.

### Claim 7 (depends on 1)

The luminaire of claim 1, wherein the luminaire location information is automatically updated based on data from one or more luminaire-based sensors after the luminaire has been moved.

### Claim 8 (depends on 1)

The luminaire of claim 1, wherein LCom signals are not emitted until the commissioning device location has been received.

### Claim 9 (depends on 1)

The luminaire of claim 1, wherein the commissioning device location is received via infrared (IR).

### Claim 10 (depends on 1)

A system comprising the luminaire of claim 1 and the commissioning device.

### Claim 11

A device comprising:
a processor configured to:
determine device location; and
detect at least one of visual, aural, and tactile feedback from a luminaire that indicates that the luminaire has not received the device location and needs to be commissioned; and
a communication module configured to transmit the device location to the luminaire in response to detecting the least one of visual, aural, and tactile feedback, wherein the device location is used for commissioning the luminaire by programming the luminaire with location information.

### Claim 12 (depends on 11)

The device of claim 11, wherein the luminaire comprises:
at least one solid-state light source configured to output light; and
at least one modulator configured to modulate the light output to allow for emission of LCom signals, wherein the signals allow the luminaire location information to be determined.

### Claim 13 (depends on 11)

The system of claim 11, wherein the device location is determined based on at least one of:
a global positioning system (GPS);
a Wi-Fi-based positioning system (WPS);
a light sensor that decodes detected light-communication based (LCom) signals; and
an inertial navigation system configured to calculate the device location using data from an accelerometer and a gyroscopic sensor.

### Claim 14 (depends on 11)

A system comprising the device of claim 11 and the luminaire.

### Claim 15

A method of commissioning a luminaire with location information, wherein commissioning includes programming the luminaire with location information, the method comprising:
providing at least one of visual, aural, and tactile feedback to indicate that luminaire location information has not been stored and needs to be commissioned;
receiving a commissioning device location from a commissioning device during commissioning;
utilizing the commissioning device location to determine the luminaire location storing the luminaire location information.

### Claim 16 (depends on 15)

The method of claim 15, further comprising providing at least one of visual, aural, and tactile feedback to indicate that the luminaire has been moved.

### Claim 17 (depends on 15)

The method of claim 15, further comprising storing information related to at least one of the following:
