## Abstract

A spinal interbody device includes a base link comprising a first end and a second end, the base link including a cutout extending through the base link between the first end and the second end; a linkage including a first link having a first end coupled to the first end of the base link and a second end, the first link including a first aperture extending through the first link and defining a first longitudinal axis; and a second link having a first end coupled to the second end of the first link and a second end coupled to the second end of the base link, the second link including a second aperture extending through the second link and defining a second longitudinal axis. The base link and the first and second links define top and bottom surfaces configured to engage adjacent portions of bone, and first and second sides extending between the top and bottom surfaces. When the linkage is movable relative to the base link between a collapsed position and an expanded position, wherein when in the expanded position, an unobstructed line of sight is provided through the cutout and the first aperture along the first longitudinal axis and through the cutout and the second aperture along the second longitudinal axis.

## Claims

### Claim 1

A spinal interbody device comprising:
a base link having a first end and a second end;
a linkage comprising:
a first link having a first end coupled to the first end of the base link and a second end; and
a second link having a first end coupled to the second end of the first link and a second end coupled to the second end of the base link;
wherein the base link and the first and second links define top and bottom surfaces configured to engage adjacent portions of bone, and first and second sides extending between the top and bottom surfaces;
at least one first imaging element provided in of the first link and positioned such that a size or shape of the at least one first imaging element as appearing in an image generated by an imaging device provides an indication of a degree of expansion of the device when the device is imaged from one of the first side and the second side of the device by the imaging device; and
at least one second imaging element provided in the second link;
wherein the at least one first imaging element defines a first longitudinal axis and the at least one second imaging element defines a second longitudinal axis, wherein the first longitudinal axis is parallel to the second longitudinal axis when the linkage is in an expanded position.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

The spinal interbody device of claim 1, wherein the at least one first imaging element comprises a pin, and wherein a length of the pin as appearing in the image generated by the imaging device provides the indication of the degree of expansion of the device when the device is imaged.

### Claim 3 (depends on 2)

The spinal interbody device of claim 2, wherein the pin of the at least one first imaging element is a first pin, and the at least one second imaging element comprises a second pin.

### Claim 4 (depends on 3)

The spinal interbody device of claim 3, wherein the first and second pins extend generally parallel to the top and bottom surfaces.

### Claim 5 (depends on 1)

The spinal interbody device of claim 1, wherein the first link pivots and translates relative to the base link, and the second link moves only in a pivoting fashion relative to the base link.

### Claim 6

A spinal interbody device comprising:
a base link comprising a first end and a second end, the base link defining a first side of the device extending between the first end and the second end; and
a linkage comprising:
a first link having a first end coupled to the first end of the base link and a second end, the first link including a first imaging element; and
a second link having a first end coupled to the second end of the first link and a second end coupled to the second end of the base link, the second link including a second imaging element;
wherein the base link and the first and second links define top and bottom surfaces configured to engage adjacent portions of bone, and the linkage defines a second side of the device opposite the first side of the device;
wherein the linkage is movable relative to the base link between a collapsed position and an expanded position, and wherein the base link and the linkage are configured such that when viewed with an imaging device from one of the first side of the device and the second side of the device, a change in the sizes of the first and second imaging elements as appearing in first and second images generated by the imaging device provide an indication of a corresponding change in a degree of expansion of the linkage relative to the base link; and
wherein the first imaging element defines a first longitudinal axis and the second imaging element defines a second longitudinal axis, wherein the first longitudinal axis is parallel to the second longitudinal axis when the linkage is in the expanded position.

### Claim 7 (depends on 6)

The device of claim 6, wherein the first and second imaging elements are cylindrical in shape.

### Claim 8 (depends on 6)

The device of claim 6, wherein the base link, the first link, and the second link are made of radiographic material.

### Claim 9

A spinal interbody device comprising:
a base link;
a first link;
a second link pivotable relative to the first link and the base link between a collapsed position and an expanded position, wherein the first link and the second link define top and bottom surfaces configured to engage adjacent portions of bone, and first and second sides extending between the top and bottom surfaces;
at least one first imaging element provided in the second link and positioned such that when viewed with a radiographic imaging device from one of the first side and the second side, a change in shape of the at least one first imaging element as appearing in an image generated by the radiographic imaging device provides an indication of a corresponding change in a degree of pivoting of the second link relative to the first link; and
at least one second imaging element provided in the first link;
wherein the base link includes a radiographic adjustment portion that facilitates moving the second link relative to the first link and provides an indication of a location of the spinal interbody device;
wherein the at least one first imaging element defines a first longitudinal axis and the at least one second imaging element defines a second longitudinal axis, wherein the first longitudinal axis is parallel to the second longitudinal axis when the first link and the second link are in an expanded position.
