Abstract
Crumb rubber obtained from recycled tires is subjected to an interlinked substitution process. The process utilizes a reactive component that interferes with sulfur bonds. The resulting treated rubber exhibits properties similar to those of the virgin composite rubber structure prior to being granulated, and is suitable for use in fabricating new tires, engineered rubber articles, and asphalt rubber for use in waterproofing and paving applications.
Claims20
A rubber-based heterogeneous matrix comprising an interpenetrating network of two or more elastomers, the network comprising sulfur bridge cross linked, re-aligned, intermingled laminates having an average spacing of from 10 nm to 5 microns, wherein each laminate comprises one of the two or more elastomers.
A laminate comprising a plurality of sheets, wherein each of the sheets comprises a rubber-based heterogeneous matrix comprising an interpenetrating network of two or more elastomers, the network comprising sulfur bridge cross linked, re-aligned, intermingled laminates having an average spacing of from 10 nm to 5 microns, wherein each laminate comprises one of the two or more elastomers.
An article selected from the group consisting of a rubber tire, an asphalt-rubber binder, an asphalt roofing material, an asphalt emulsion, a tire tread, a tire sidewall, a roofing membrane, a high dielectric electrical tape, a tank lining, a reservoir lining, a trench lining, a bridge underlayment, a wire harness wrap, a self-bonding wire harness wrap, a shoe sole, a rubber boot, an electrical tape, a foundation waterproofing, a parking garage waterproofing, a hose, a belt, and a molding, the article comprising a rubber-based heterogeneous matrix comprising an interpenetrating network of two or more elastomers, the network comprising sulfur bridge cross linked, re-aligned, intermingled laminates having an average spacing of from 10 nm to 5 microns, wherein each laminate comprises one of the two or more elastomers.
