Abstract
Substituted aurones were found to have antitrypanosomal, antifungal and immunomodulatory activity. The invention provides novel aurone compounds, pharmaceutical compositions, and methods encompassing medical and veterinary applications.

A method for treating or preventing a condition in a subject, wherein the condition comprises a trypanosomatid infection, the method comprising administering to the subject a composition comprising an effective amount of at least one compound having Formula I:
- wherein:
- Y is O, N or S;
- Z is
- wherein:
- X is C, O, N, or S;
- R1 is substituted or unsubstituted alkyl, substituted or unsubstituted aryl, halogen, nitro, cyano, amine, ester, or combinations thereof;
- and
- b is 0, 1, 2, 3 or 4;
- R2 is substituted or unsubstituted alkyl, substituted or unsubstituted alkenyl, substituted or unsubstituted alkynyl, substituted or unsubstituted aryl, substituted or unsubstituted alkoxy, hydroxyl, halogen, amine, cyano, nitro, azido, ethers, or combinations thereof;
- and
- a is 0, 1, 2, 3 or 4.

- at least one compound having Formula I:
- wherein:

- Z is

- and

- a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier;
- wherein the composition is formulated for use in treating a trypanosomid infection.
