Abstract
The present invention is directed to communication systems and methods. According to an embodiment, a receiving optical transceiver determines signal quality for signals received from a transmitting optical transceiver. Information related to the signal quality is embedded into back-channel data and sent to the transmitting optical transceiver. The transmitting optical transceiver detects the presence of the back-channel data and adjusts one or more of its operating parameters based on the back-channel data. There are other embodiments as well.

A communication system, the system comprising:
- a communication link;
- a first transceiver comprising a first control module and a first decoder;
- and
- a second transceiver comprising a second control module and a second transmitter, the second transceiver being configured to send data to the first transceiver;
- wherein:
- the first transceiver is configured to detect first backchannel data and from a first data stream received from the second transceiver, the first data stream comprising a first data frame;
- the first decoder is configured to decode the first data frame;
- the first control module is configured to process the first backchannel data if the first backchannel data are determined to be compatible;
- if the first transceiver detects the first backchannel data based on a compatibility with the second transceiver, the first transceiver is configured to determine signal characteristics information associated with the first data stream and insert the signal characteristic information into a second backchannel data, the second backchannel data being embedded in a second data frame;
- and
- if the first transceiver detects no first back channel data from the first data stream, the first transceiver processes the first data stream without determining the signal characteristics information associated with the first data stream.
An optical transceiver apparatus comprising:
- an optical receiver configured to provide an incoming data stream based on received optical data, the incoming data stream including a first encoded data block, the first encoded data block including a first alignment marker section and a first overhead region;
- a detection module configured to detect first backchannel data stored at the first overhead region, the detection module being further configured to determine a compatibility using the first backchannel data;
- a digital signal processor (DSP) configured to analyze the incoming data stream and to generate a first signal quality value characterizing the incoming data stream if the incoming data stream is compatible;
- a decoder module configured to decode at least first encoded data block and generate a second signal quality value based on an error rate if the incoming data stream is compatible;
- an encoder module configured to generate a second encoded data block, the second encoded data block including a second alignment marker section and a second overhead region;
- a control module configured to generate second backchannel data and to cause encoder module to insert the second backchannel data into the second overhead region if the incoming data stream is compatible, the second backchannel data being based at least on the first signal quality value and the second signal quality value;
- and
- a transmitter for outputting an outgoing data stream, the outgoing data stream comprising the second encoded data block.
An optical communication method, the method comprising:
- receiving optical data;
- converting the optical data to an incoming data stream, the incoming data stream including a first encoded data block, the first encoded data block including a first alignment marker section and a first overhead region;
- detecting first backchannel data stored at the first overhead region;
- determining a compatibility using the first backchannel data;
- analyzing the incoming data stream and to generate a first signal quality value characterizing the incoming data stream if the incoming data stream is compatible
- decoding at least first encoded data block;
- generating a second signal quality value based on an error rate if the incoming data stream is compatible;
- generating a second encoded data block, the second encoded data block including a second alignment marker section and a second overhead region
- inserting second backchannel data into the second overhead region if the incoming data stream is compatible, the second backchannel data being based at least on the first signal quality value and the second signal quality value;
- and
- transmitting the second encoded data block.
