Batched storage hinting with fast guest storage allocation

A system comprising:

• a memory;
• a processing device executing a hypervisor and operatively coupled to the memory, the processing device to:
• detect that storage has been released by a guest operating system and remains allocated to a virtual machine executing the guest operating system;
• access one or more sets of storage blocks, wherein a set of the one or more sets comprises an identifier that is associated with the storage and is associated with the virtual machine;
• receive a request to allocate a storage block to the virtual machine;
• identify, by the hypervisor, at least one storage block of the one or more sets that is associated with the virtual machine;
• and
• allocate the at least one storage block to the virtual machine.

A non-transitory machine-readable storage medium storing instructions that cause a processing device executing a hypervisor to:

• detect that storage is released by a guest operating system and remains allocated to a virtual machine executing the guest operating system;
• verify that the storage released by the guest operating system is exclusively assigned to the virtual machine;
• accessing one or more sets of storage blocks, wherein a set of the one or more sets comprises an identifier that is associated with the storage and is associated with the virtual machine;
• receive a request to allocate a storage block to the virtual machine;
• identify, by the hypervisor, at least one storage block of the one or more sets that is associated with the virtual machine;
• and
• allocating the at least one storage block to the virtual machine.
