System and method for underground wireless sensor communication

A system, comprising:

• a plurality of sensor nodes, each sensor node of the plurality of sensor nodes comprising:
• one or more sensors positioned below the surface of a material, the one or more sensors configured to collect data regarding one or more sub-surface material characteristics;
• a power supply;
• and
• a communication device;
• a controller;
• and
• a data gateway communicatively coupled to at least one sensor node of the plurality of sensor nodes, wherein the data gateway is configured to:
• receive data collected by the one or more sensors;
• store data received from the one or more sensors;
• and
• transmit stored data to the controller,
• wherein the controller is configured to display data associated with the one or more sub-surface material characteristics,
• wherein the plurality of sensor nodes comprises one or more underground sensor nodes and one or more partially-exposed sensor nodes, wherein the one or more partially-exposed sensor nodes are configured to relay data from the one or more underground sensor nodes to the data gateway and wherein the one or more partially-exposed sensor nodes include a GPS device.
