Abstract
The invention relates to a probe arranged for subsurface penetration of a soil for measuring properties of the soil. The probe comprising a probe body and at least one fiber optical sensor. The at least one fiber optical sensor is arranged for measuring at least one of a cone resistance, sleeve friction, pore water pressure or inclination.
Claims19
A probe configured to measure properties of soil, comprising:
- a probe body including a cone tip configured to penetrate a soil;
- and
- at least one fiber optical sensor including a pair of Fiber Bragg Gratings (FBG) with a center attachment between a first FBG of the pair and a second FBG of the pair, the sensor configured to measure at least one of a cone resistance, sleeve friction, pore water pressure or inclination of the soil,
- wherein in response to a force exerted on the cone tip, the center attachment moves towards an outer attachment, the first FBG is extended, the second FBG is shortened and the pair have an oppose sign, and
- in a response to a temperature change the pair have a same sign.
2 more elements
A probing system including:
- a probe including a probe body and a cone tip;
- a drive unit configured to drive the probe into a soil;
- at least one fiber optical sensor including a pair of Fiber Bragg Gratings (FBG) with a center attachment between a first FBG of the pair and a second FBG of the pair, the sensor configured to measure at least one of a cone resistance, sleeve friction, pore water pressure or inclination of the soil;
- and
- a data acquisition system configured to sample measurement signals from the probe, including a fiber optic interrogator configured to interrogate the at least one optical fiber sensors of the probe,
- wherein in response to a force exerted on the cone tip, the center attachment moves towards an outer attachment, the first FBG is extended, the second FBG is shortened and the pair have an oppose sign, and
- in a response to a temperature change the pair have a same sign.
4 more elements
A method for determining soil properties, comprising:
- pushing a probe into a soil, the probe comprising a probe body including a cone tip and at least one fiber optical sensor including a pair of Fiber Bragg Gratings (FBG) with a center attachment between a first FBG of the pair and a second FBG of the pair, wherein in response to a force exerted on the cone tip, the center attachment moves towards an outer attachment, the first FBG is extended, the second FBG is shortened and the pair have an oppose sign, and in a response to a temperature change the pair have a same sign;
- measuring, via the at least one fiber optical sensor, at least one of a cone resistance, sleeve friction, pore water pressure or inclination,
- determining at least one of a cone resistance, sleeve friction, pore water pressure or inclination based on the measurements.
