Abstract
A device for steering a drilling assembly including a sleeve configured to be disposed around a length of a drive shaft configured to be disposed in a borehole in an earth formation. The drive shaft is configured to be rotated. The sleeve is configured to be rotationally decoupled from the drive shaft. Two or more modules are configured to be removably connected to the sleeve. Each of the two or more modules at least partially encloses a biasing element configured to be actuated to control a direction of the drilling assembly. Each of the two or more modules at least partially encloses a communication device for wireless communication.
Claims19
A device for steering a drilling assembly, comprising:
- a sleeve configured to be disposed around a length of a drive shaft configured to be disposed in a borehole in an earth formation, the drive shaft configured to be rotated, the sleeve is configured to be rotationally decoupled from the drive shaft;
- and
- two or more modules configured to be removably connected to the sleeve, each of the two or more modules at least partially enclosing a biasing element configured to be actuated to control a direction of the drilling assembly, each of the two or more modules at least partially enclosing a communication device having an antenna for wireless communication, wherein the antenna in at least one of the two or more modules is configured to receive signals that are transmitted by the antenna of the communication device in the other of the two or more modules to coordinate activation of biasing elements on each of the two or more modules to steer the drilling assembly.
A device for steering a drilling assembly, comprising:
- a sleeve configured to be disposed around a length of a drive shaft configured to be disposed in a borehole in an earth formation, the drive shaft configured to be rotated, the sleeve configured to be rotationally decoupled from the drive shaft;
- two or more modules configured to be removably connected to the sleeve, each of the two or more modules at least partially enclosing a biasing element configured to be actuated to control a direction of the drilling assembly, each of the two or more modules at least partially enclosing a communication device for wireless communication;
- and
- an energy transmitting device and an energy receiving device, the energy receiving device disposed in at least one of the two or more modules, wherein the energy transmitting device transmits energy at least partially wirelessly to the energy receiving device.
A method of steering a drilling assembly, comprising:
- disposing the drilling assembly in an earth formation, the drilling assembly including a sleeve configured to be disposed around a length of a drive shaft, the sleeve configured to be rotationally decoupled from the drive shaft;
- removably connecting two or more modules to the sleeve, each of the two or more modules at least partially enclosing a biasing element and a communication device having an antenna for wireless communication;
- transmitting signals through the antenna at the commination device of at least one of the two or more modules to another communication device at another of the two or more modules;
- receiving the signals transmitted by the antenna of the communication device at the at least one of the two or more modules at an antenna of the another communication device of the another of the two or more modules to coordinate activation of biasing elements on each of the two or more modules;
- and
- actuating the biasing elements to control a direction of the drilling assembly.
A method of steering a drilling assembly, comprising:
- disposing the drilling assembly in a borehole in an earth formation, the drilling assembly including a sleeve configured to be disposed around a length of a drive shaft, the sleeve configured to be rotationally decoupled from the drive shaft;
- removably connecting two or more modules to the sleeve, each of the two or more modules at least partially enclosing a biasing element engaged with a wall of the borehole and a communication device for wireless communication;
- communicating, with the communication device at each of the two or more modules;
- actuating the biasing element in at least one of the two or more modules to control a direction of the drilling assembly;
- and
- providing, at least partially wirelessly, energy to the at least one of the two or more modules by an energy transmitting device and an energy receiving device, the energy receiving device disposed in the at least one of the two or more modules.
