Railway car truck system

A rail car truck assembly comprising:

• a first and second side frame extending parallel to a longitudinal axis of the rail car truck assembly;
• a first wheel set having a first axle, wheels, and roller bearings, the first wheel set spanning between the first and second side frames on a first side of the rail car truck assembly;
• a second wheel set comprising a second axle, wheels, and roller bearings, the second wheel set spanning between the first and second side frames on a second side of the rail car truck assembly opposite the first side;
• and
• a steering assembly comprising:
• a first steering arm having two support arms that form a V-shape with a first vertex, the two support arms extending from the first vertex and attaching to the individual roller bearings of the first wheel set, the first V-shaped steering arm also having a first joining component that extends from the first vertex on a side opposite the two support arms of the first steering arm, the first joining component having a first recess;
• a second steering arm having two support arms that form a V-shape with a second vertex, the two support arms extending from the second vertex and attaching to the roller bearings of the second wheel set, the second V-shaped steering arm also having a second joining component that extends from the second vertex opposite the two support arms of the second steering arm, the second joining component having a second recess;
• an insert having a first side with a shape configured to mate with the recess of the first joining component, and an opposing second side with a shape configured to mate with the recess of the second joining component, the insert comprising a base that includes a rigid material, and a flexible material extending from the base along each of the first and second sides, the insert having a conical shape and defining a central opening;
• and
• at least one articulating device configured to establish an articulated connection between the first steering arm and the second steering arm,
• wherein the insert mates with the recesses of the first and second joining components to maintain a minimum separation between the first and second joining components, the minimum separation being sufficient to allow the first and second steering arms to yaw relative to one another, and
• wherein the insert is configured to provide resistance to the relative rotation between the first and second steering arms, wherein the resistance depends, at least in part, on the flexibility of the flexible material.
