Abstract
A catheter configured to be deployed in a urinary tract of a patient includes a proximal portion configured to pass through a percutaneous opening and a distal portion including a retention portion. The retention portion is configured to be deployed in a kidney, renal pelvis, and/or bladder of the patient. The retention portion includes one or more protected drainage holes, ports or perforations and is configured, when deployed, to establish an outer periphery or protective surface area that inhibits mucosal tissue from occluding the one or more protected drainage holes, ports, or perforations upon application of negative pressure through the catheter.
Claims42
A percutaneous kidney catheter, comprising:
- a proximal portion configured to pass through a percutaneous opening;
- and
- a distal portion comprising a retention portion,
- wherein the retention portion comprises an outer periphery or protective surface area that inhibits mucosal tissue from a kidney, renal pelvis and/or uretero-renal pelvis junction from occluding one or more protected drainage holes, ports, or perforations upon application of negative pressure through the catheter.
A system for inducing negative pressure in a portion of a urinary tract, the system comprising:
- a percutaneous kidney catheter comprising:
- a proximal portion configured to pass through a percutaneous opening;
- and a distal portion comprising a retention portion, wherein the retention portion comprises an outer periphery or protective surface area that inhibits mucosal tissue from a kidney, renal pelvis and/or uretero-renal pelvis junction from occluding one or more protected drainage holes, ports, or perforations upon application of negative pressure through the catheter;
- and
- a pump inducing negative pressure in a portion of the urinary tract, which causes fluid from the urinary tract to be drawn into the catheter at least partially through one or more of the protected drainage holes, ports, or perforations.
A method for removing fluid from a urinary tract, the method comprising:
- inserting a urinary catheter through a percutaneous opening and into a kidney, renal pelvis and/or uretero-renal pelvic junction, the urinary catheter comprising a retention portion comprising an outer periphery or protective surface area that inhibits mucosal tissue from the kidney, renal pelvis and/or uretero-renal pelvis from occluding one or more protected drainage holes, ports, or perforations upon application of negative pressure through the catheter.
A negative pressure therapy system for increasing urine production, the negative pressure therapy system comprising:
- (a) a pump assembly, the pump assembly comprising:
- (i) a pump configured to provide negative pressure to a kidney, and
- (ii) a controller configured to regulate the negative pressure provided by the pump within a pressure range that facilitates increased urine production from the kidney;
- (b) a catheter comprising (i) a proximal portion including a drainage lumen and (ii) a distal portion including a retention portion configured to be positioned in a urinary tract, the retention portion comprising one or more drainage ports that permit fluid flow into the drainage lumen, wherein the retention portion is configured such that, when the pump provides negative pressure through the catheter, fluid is drawn into the one or more drainage ports while mucosal tissue is prevented from appreciably occluding the one or more drainage ports, wherein the proximal portion of the catheter is configured to pass through a percutaneous opening of a body.
