Abstract
A hand vacuum cleaner has a cyclone, a suction motor and fan assembly downstream of the cyclone and a post motor filter downstream of the suction motor and fan assembly. The post-motor filter housing has an openable bottom panel provided in the lower end of the hand vacuum cleaner.

A hand vacuum cleaner having a front end, a rear end, an upper end, a lower end and a handle, the hand vacuum cleaner comprising:
- (a) an air flow passage extending from an air inlet to a clean air outlet, wherein the air inlet comprises an inlet conduit having an inlet end, an outlet end and a central longitudinally extending inlet conduit axis extending from the inlet end of the inlet conduit to the outlet end of the inlet conduit;
- (b) a cyclone downstream of the air inlet, the cyclone having a cyclone axis of rotation;
- (c) a pre-motor filter downstream from the air treatment member;
- (d) a suction motor and fan assembly downstream of the pre-motor filter, the suction motor and fan assembly having a central axis of rotation;
- and,
- (e) a post motor filter downstream of the suction motor and fan assembly and positioned in a post-motor filter housing, the post-motor filter housing having an openable bottom panel,
- wherein, when the hand vacuum cleaner is oriented with the inlet conduit at the upper end of the hand vacuum cleaner and the inlet conduit axis is oriented substantially horizontally:
- (i) the cyclone axis of rotation is oriented substantially horizontally;
- (ii) an upper end of the pre-motor filter is positioned above the cyclone;
- (iii) the suction motor and fan assembly is positioned below the pre-motor filter;
- (iv) the central axis of rotation of the suction motor and fan assembly is oriented substantially vertically;
- and,
- (v) the openable bottom panel is provided in the lower end of the hand vacuum cleaner.
A hand vacuum cleaner having a front end, a rear end, an upper end, a lower end and a handle, the hand vacuum cleaner comprising:
- (a) an air flow passage extending from an air inlet to a clean air outlet;
- (b) a cyclone downstream of the air inlet, the cyclone having a cyclone axis of rotation and a dirt collection region;
- (c) a pre-motor filter downstream from the air treatment member;
- (d) a suction motor and fan assembly downstream of the pre-motor filter, the suction motor and fan assembly having a central axis of rotation;
- and,
- (e) a post motor filter downstream of the suction motor and fan assembly and positioned in a post-motor filter housing,
- wherein, when the hand vacuum cleaner is oriented with the air inlet at the upper end of the hand vacuum cleaner, the air inlet is at the front of the hand vacuum cleaner and the cyclone axis of rotation is oriented substantially horizontally:
- (i) an upper end of the pre-motor filter is positioned above at the upper end of the hand vacuum cleaner;
- (ii) the suction motor and fan assembly is positioned below the pre-motor filter;
- (iii) the central axis of rotation is oriented substantially vertically;
- and,
- (iv) an inlet of the suction motor and fan assembly is rearward of the dirt collection region.
A hand vacuum cleaner having a front end, a rear end, an upper end, a lower end and a handle, the hand vacuum cleaner comprising:
- (a) an air flow passage extending from an air inlet to a clean air outlet;
- (b) a cyclone assembly downstream of the air inlet, the cyclone assembly comprising a cyclone, a dirt collection chamber exterior to the cyclone chamber, a cyclone assembly air inlet and a cyclone assembly air outlet, the cyclone having a cyclone axis of rotation;
- (c) a pre-motor filter downstream from the air treatment member;
- (d) a suction motor and fan assembly downstream of the pre-motor filter, the suction motor and fan assembly having a central axis of rotation;
- and,
- (e) a post motor filter downstream of the suction motor and fan assembly and positioned in a post-motor filter housing,
- wherein, when the hand vacuum cleaner is oriented with the air inlet at the upper end of the hand vacuum cleaner, the air inlet at the front of the hand vacuum cleaner and the cyclone axis of rotation is oriented substantially horizontally:
- (i) the cyclone assembly air inlet is at a front end of the cyclone assembly;
- (ii) the cyclone assembly air outlet is at a rear end of the cyclone assembly;
- (iii) air exists rearwardly from the cyclone assembly and then upwardly towards an upper end of the pre-motor filter;
- (iv) air travels downwardly from the pre-motor filter to an inlet end of the suction motor and fan assembly;
- and,
- (v) the central axis of rotation of the suction motor and fan assembly is oriented substantially vertically.
