Abstract
A DC plasma arc furnace, a method of co-processing waste and metal, a method of producing energy by processing material using the furnace, and the products produced by the furnace are provided. Metal may be efficiently processed by the furnace via an increased organic content in other feedstock fed into the furnace.
Claims19
A method of processing metal in a DC plasma arc furnace, comprising:
- feeding nitrogen gas into the furnace;
- maintaining an anoxic gas atmosphere within the DC plasma arc furnace;
- providing at least one nitrogen plasma arc between at least two electrodes in the furnace;
- feeding a metal feedstock into at least one of the at least one nitrogen plasma arcs in the DC plasma arc furnace;
- feeding a non-metal feedstock into at least one of the at least one nitrogen plasma arcs in the DC plasma arc furnace and
- maintaining a temperature of the DC plasma arc furnace at a temperature of at least 2,500° C. during the feeding of the metal feedstock and the feeding of the non-metal feedstock;
- wherein the metal feedstock and the non-metal feedstock are processed at the same time in the furnace, and
- wherein the furnace comprises refractory blocks sufficient to withstand temperatures of at least 2,500° C.
