Abstract
A cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) device for performing automatic defibrillation and chest compressions on a patient and method for using same. The CPR device having a balloon configured to inflate/deflate, a belt configured to securely strap around a chest of a patient, a pair of electrode pads configured to deliver shock energy from a shock source, and, optionally, a pulse oximeter sensor. The CPR device is in electrical communication with a CPR defibrillator/ECG computer system that is configured to control the CPR device.
Claims20
A cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) device configured to perform automatic defibrillation to a heart of a patient and chest compressions on the patient, the CPR device comprising:
- a treatment computer system comprising at least a CPR defibrillator module and an electrocardiogram (ECG) module;
- a belt configured to selectively circumferentially surround a portion of a chest of the patient, the belt having an inward facing surface that is configured to contact the portion of the patient's chest when engaged to the patient;
- a balloon mounted onto the inward facing surface of the belt, wherein the balloon is configured to selectively move about and between an inflated position, such that the balloon is configured to move inwardly and away from the inward facing surface to provide a desired compression onto the portion of the chest of the patient that the balloon overlies, and a deflated position;
- a balloon actuator module in communication with the treatment computer system for selective control of a movement of the balloon about and between the inflated and deflated positions;
- and
- a plurality of spaced electrode pads mounted to the inward facing surface of the belt, wherein the plurality of spaced electrode pads is in communication with the CPR defibrillator module in the treatment computer system for selective delivery of shock energy to the patient, wherein a first electrode pad of the plurality of electrode pads is configured to underlie a back of the patient and a second electrode pad of the plurality of electrode pads is configured to overlie a front portion of the chest of the patient when the belt is engaged to the patient;
- wherein the treatment computer system further comprises a shock source in communication with the plurality of electrode pads;
- and wherein the shock source is configured to selectively apply a specific waveform of an electric energy charge from the shock source to the plurality of electrode pads as selectively controlled by the defibrillator module,
- wherein the belt defines a pocket in an outward facing surface of the belt;
- wherein the pocket is configured to underlie the back of the patient when the belt is engaged to the patient;
- and wherein the pocket is sized to selectively accept a support block to provide support for a portion of the back of the patient prior to actuation of the balloon actuator module.
