Laminated glass retention system

A window or door assembly comprising:

• a glass subassembly with edges surrounded and supported by a frame;
• the frame and the glass subassembly each having an inside surface that faces the inside of a structure when the window or door assembly is installed and an outside surface that faces the outside of the structure when the window or door is installed;
• the frame having a generally L-shaped interior channel defined by a peripheral wall extending from the inside surface of the frame to a corner edge and an inside facing attachment surface extending from the corner edge of the peripheral wall to a free edge;
• the edges of the glass subassembly being seated within the generally L-shaped interior channel with a space defined between the edges of the glass subassembly and the peripheral wall of the channel;
• a retention member having a first portion that extends along the edges of the glass subassembly and engages the inside surface of the glass subassembly and a second portion that extends along and engages the frame adjacent the L-shaped channel;
• a leg extending from the retention member into the space between the edges of the glass subassembly and the peripheral wall of the channel, the leg extending to a distal edge spaced from the inside facing attachment surface of the L-shaped interior channel and being spaced from the edges of the glass subassembly and from the peripheral wall of the L-shaped channel;
• and
• a bonding material disposed at least in the space between the edges of the glass subassembly and the peripheral wall of the channel with the bonding material at least partially encapsulating the leg;
• the at least partially encapsulated leg securing the retention member to the frame to improve the resistance of the glass unit to being dislodged from the channel by an outside force.
