Abstract
Among other things, a gas storage system includes a group of capsules and an activation element coupled to the group. The group of capsules are formed within a substrate and contain gas stored at a relatively high pressure compared to atmospheric pressure. The activation element is configured to deliver energy in an amount sufficient to cause at least one of the capsules to release stored gas.
Claims24
A gas storage system comprising:
- a plurality of substrates arranged in a stack that provides a plurality of elongated capsules within the stack, with the plurality of elongated capsules comprising a pair of end substrates and at least one intermediate substrate disposed between the pair of end substrates in the stack, with the plurality of elongated capsules configured into one or more groups of elongated capsules that contain a gas stored at a relatively high pressure of at least 2,200 pounds per square inch up to at least 17,500 pounds per square inch, compared to atmospheric pressure;
- and
- an activation element coupled to at least some of the groups of capsules, the activation element configured to deliver energy in an amount sufficient to cause at least one of the capsules in a corresponding group of the one or more groups of capsules to release the stored gas.
A system for digitally controlled release of a gas, the system comprises:
- a plurality of substrates arranged in a stack, with the plurality of substrates comprising a pair of end substrates and at least one intermediate substrate disposed between the pair of end substrates in the stack, with the plurality of substrates providing a plurality of capsules, with the plurality of capsules configured into one or more groups of capsules, and the plurality of capsules having passages among the plurality of capsules in the one or more groups of capsules, and with the plurality of capsules containing an elemental gas that is stored at a relatively high pressure of at least 2,200 pounds per square inch up to at least 17,500 pounds per square inch compared to atmospheric pressure;
- plural activation elements coupled to the one or more groups of the capsules, with the plural activation elements comprising a conductor disposed over at least one capsule in at least some of the groups of capsules to provide thermal activation;
- and
- control circuitry configured to deliver a control signal to a selected activation element, the control signal causing the selected activation element to rupture a corresponding group of capsules to release the elemental gas stored in the corresponding group.
