Composition and method of manufacturing calcium magnesium sulfonate greases

A method for making a highly rheopectic sulfonate-based grease composition comprising the steps of:

• adding and mixing an overbased calcium sulfonate having amorphous calcium carbonate dispersed therein, overbased magnesium sulfonate, a facilitating acid comprising an alkyl benzene sulfonic acid, water, and a calcium containing base to form a pre-conversion mixture;
• converting the pre-conversion mixture to a converted mixture by heating until conversion of the amorphous calcium carbonate contained in the overbased calcium sulfonate to a crystalline form has occurred;
• wherein all the overbased calcium sulfonate and all the overbased magnesium sulfonate are added prior to the facilitating acid;
• wherein there is no facilitating acid delay period between the addition of the facilitating acid and any subsequently added ingredient;
• and
• wherein the composition is fluid and pumpable prior to milling or shearing.
