Abstract
A method for bonding the tail of a convolutely wound log to the body is provided. The method comprises the use of a bonding material to bond the tail to the wound log. The bonding material is applied to application sites arranged in a non-uniform pattern.
Claims18
A method for affixing a tail to a convolutely wound log of web material, the method comprising:
- providing a log of wound web material, the web material having a machine direction and a cross direction, the log of wound web material having a tail portion;
- the web material having a peak and a valley;
- applying a bonding material to an exterior surface of the log of wound web material at a first application site, a second application site, a third application site, a fourth application site, a fifth application site, and a sixth application site;
- wherein the first application site is longer in the machine direction than the second application site, and wherein the second application site is longer in the machine direction than the third application site;
- wherein first application site is disposed adjacent to a first outer edge of the log of wound web material;
- wherein the fourth application site is longer in the machine direction than the fifth application site, and wherein the fifth application site is longer in the machine direction than the sixth application site;
- wherein the fourth application site is disposed adjacent to a second outer edge of the log of wound web material;
- wherein the first and fourth application sites are approximately the same length in the machine direction;
- wherein the each of the first application site, the second application site, the third application site, the fourth application site, the fifth application site, and the sixth application site are disconnected in the cross-direction;
- and
- wherein at least the first and fourth application sites have an MD extent greater than a CD extent.

A method for affixing a tail to a convolutely wound log of web material, the method comprising:
- providing a log of wound web material, the web material having a machine direction and a cross-direction, the web material having a peak and a valley, wherein the maximum height distance between the peak and the valley is from about 365 μm to about 780 μm, the log of wound web material having a body portion and a tail portion, wherein the tail portion defines a first portion, a grasping portion, and a second portion;
- applying a bonding material to an exterior surface of the log of wound web material at a first plurality of application sites disposed at the first portion and a second plurality of application sites disposed at the second portion, wherein the grasping portion is devoid of any application sites, and wherein the bonding material is applied in a tapered pattern in the cross-direction, and wherein each of the first plurality of application sites and the second plurality of application sites are disconnected in a cross-direction;
- wherein the first plurality of application sites taper, such that they have less of an MD extent, as they approach the grasping portion from a first outer edge of the log of wound material and wherein the second plurality of application sites taper, such that they have less of an MD extent, as they approach the grasping portion from a second outer edge of the log of wound material;
- wherein a visual indicator is disposed proximate to the grasping portion, and wherein the grasping portion is located between the first plurality of application sites and the second plurality of application sites;
- and
- wherein at least a first application site from the first plurality of application sites and wherein at least a second application site from a second plurality of application sites have an MD extent greater than a CD extent.
