Abstract
The present disclosure is directed toward a method that includes logging offset data of a machine over a period of operational time having varying thermal conditions, comparing the logged offset data against a thermal model, estimating offsets for the machine based on the comparing, and adjusting offsets of the machine during operation.
Claims13
A method of calibrating a computer numerical control (CNC) machine controlled by a controller, the method comprising:
- determining, by the controller, a location of a reference point relative to at least one component of the CNC machine;
- calculating, by the controller, offset data of the CNC machine as a difference between the location of the reference point and a known location of the reference point;
- logging, by the controller, the offset data of the CNC machine over a period of operational time having varying thermal conditions;
- comparing, by the controller, the logged offset data against a thermal model, wherein the thermal model is predefined and associates thermal growth of the CNC machine over varying temperature and time;
- estimating, by the controller, one or more offsets of the CNC machine along one or more positioning axes from the reference point based on the comparison of the logged offset data and the thermal model;
- and
- adjusting, by the controller, during operation of the CNC machine, one or more positions for the CNC machine provided in a CNC program based on the one or more offsets estimated.
A controller for calibrating a computer numerical control (CNC) machine, the controller comprising:
- a memory;
- and
- a processor configured to:
- determine a location of a reference point relative to at least one component of the CNC machine;
- calculate offset data of the CNC machine as a difference between the location of the reference point and a known location of the reference point;
- store, in the memory, the offset data of the CNC machine over a period of operational time having varying thermal conditions;
- compare the offset data of the CNC machine against a thermal model, wherein the thermal model is predefined and associates thermal growth of the CNC machine over varying temperature and time;
- estimate one or more offsets of the CNC machine along one or more positioning axes from the reference point based on the comparison of the offset data of the CNC machine and the thermal model;
- and
- adjust, during operation of the CNC machine, one or more positions for the CNC machine provided in a CNC program based on the one or more offsets estimated.
A controller for calibrating a computer numerical control (CNC) machine, the controller comprising:
- a memory configured to store a plurality of control programs for controlling the CNC machine, wherein the control programs include a thermal offset calibration process;
- and
- a processor configured to execute the control pogroms, wherein the processor is configured to execute the thermal offset calibration process to:
- determine a location of a reference point relative to at least one component of the CNC machine;
- calculate offset data of the CNC machine as a difference between the location of the reference point and a known location of the reference point;
- store, in the memory, the offset data of the CNC machine over a period of operational time having varying thermal conditions;
- compare the offset data against a thermal model, wherein the thermal model is predefined and associates thermal growth of the machine over varying temperature and time;
- estimate one or more offsets for the CNC machine along one or more positioning axes from the reference point based on the comparison of the offset data and the thermal model;
- and
- adjust, during the operation of the CNC machine, one or more positions for the CNC machine provided in a CNC program based on the one or more offsets estimated.
