Abstract
The technology described herein generally relates to an automated packaging apparatus and system that packages loose particles into a conical container as well as the final folded packages. More specifically, loose plant matter, such as crumbled dried leaves, are supplied to successive paper cones. The apparatus packs the crumbled leaves into the cones, closes the wide top portion of the cone into a precise shape, and then runs a quality control check to ensure that the final filled cone meets preset specifications.
Claims16
A packaging apparatus comprising:
- an injector station, a carousel, a cone conveyor, a packing station, and a folding station;
- the injector station comprising:
- a reservoir, a pump, a needle, a fluid circuit that provides a fluid pathway between the reservoir and a tip of the needle, a receptacle, and at least one receptacle actuator wherein the receptacle actuator is connected to the receptacle and adapted to move the receptacle relative to the needle;
- the carousel being adapted to hold a plurality of stacks of nested cones;
- the cone conveyor being associated with an actuator adapted to move the cone conveyor and the cone conveyor including a plurality of cavities adapted to accommodate a cone;
- the packing station comprising:
- a chute having an inlet and an exit hole;
- the folding station comprising:
- a folding tip and plurality of folding fingers, wherein the folding fingers are adapted to come together and surround a distal end of a cone and the folding tip is oriented above the folding fingers and adapted to compress the distal end of a cone;
- wherein the carousel, the cone conveyor, the packing station, and the folding station are oriented relative to one another such that as the cone conveyor moves a first cavity of the plurality of cavities forward, the first cavity moves
- a) from a starting point to the carousel to enable a first cone held by the carousel to be transferred to the first cavity of the cone conveyor;
- b) then to the packing station such that the exit hole is oriented at least in part above the first cavity of the cone conveyor;
- c) then to the folding station such that the folding fingers are oriented at least in part above the first cavity of the cone conveyor;
- and
- d) then back to the starting point.
A packaging apparatus comprising:
- an injector station, a carousel, a cone conveyor, a packing station, and a folding station;
- the carousel being adapted to support a plurality of cones;
- the injector station comprising:
- a reservoir, a pump, a needle, a fluid circuit that provides a fluid pathway between the reservoir and a tip of the needle, a receptacle, and at least one receptacle actuator wherein the receptacle actuator is connected to the receptacle and adapted to move the receptacle relative to the needle;
- the cone conveyor comprising a first cavity for accommodating a cone and the cone conveyor being associated with an actuator adapted to move the cone conveyor;
- the packing station comprising:
- a chute having an inlet and an exit hole;
- the folding station comprising:
- a folding tip and one or more folding fingers, wherein the one or more folding fingers are adapted to compress a distal end of a cone;
- wherein the carousel, the cone conveyor, the packing station, and the folding station are oriented relative to one another such that as the cone conveyor moves the first cavity forward, the first cavity moves
- a) from a starting point to the carousel to enable a first cone supported by the carousel to be transferred to the first cavity of the cone conveyor;
- b) then to the packing station such that the exit hole is oriented at least in part above the first cavity of the cone conveyor;
- c) then to the folding station such that the one or more folding fingers the folding fingers are oriented at least in part above the first cavity of the cone conveyor;
- and
- d) then back to the starting point.
A packaging apparatus comprising:
- a carousel, a cone conveyor, a packing station, a folding station, a grinder hopper, and an injector station;
- the carousel being adapted to support a plurality of cones;
- the cone conveyor being associated with an actuator adapted to move the cone conveyor;
- the cone conveyor further comprising a plurality of dies arranged along the cone conveyor wherein at least one die includes a first cavity of the cone conveyor;
- the grinder hopper further comprising:
- a container having an inlet and an outlet, a wheel and an actuator adapted to rotate the wheel such that as the wheel rotates, matter within the grinder hopper moves through the outlet;
- the grinder hopper is oriented adjacent to the packing station such that matter exiting the grinder hopper through the outlet is directed into the packing station;
- the injector station further comprising a reservoir, a pump, a needle, and a fluid circuit that provides a fluid pathway between the reservoir and a tip of the needle;
- the packing station comprising:
- a chute having an inlet and an exit hole;
- the folding station comprising:
- a folding tip and a plurality of folding fingers, wherein the folding fingers are adapted to come together and surround a distal end of a cone and the folding tip is oriented above the folding fingers and adapted to compress the distal end of a cone;
- wherein the carousel, the cone conveyor, the packing station, and the folding station are oriented relative to one another such that the die including the first cavity of the cone conveyor is adapted to move beneath the folding station such that the first cavity aligns with the folding tip and such that as the cone conveyor moves the first cavity forward, the first cavity moves
- a) from a starting point to the carousel to enable a first cone held by the carousel to be transferred to the first cavity of the cone conveyor;
- b) then to the packing station such that the exit hole is oriented at least in part above the first cavity of the cone conveyor;
- c) then to the folding station such that the folding fingers are oriented at least in part above the first cavity of the cone conveyor;
- and
- d) then back to the starting point.
A packaging apparatus comprising:
- a carousel, a cone conveyor, a packing station, a folding station, a grinder hopper, and an injector station;
